Hoyas Drop 66-63 Heartbreaker to Xavier

WASHINGTON – Clawing its way back to tie the game after trailing by as many as nine in the second half, the Georgetown men's basketball team dropped a 66-63 heartbreaker to the visiting Xavier University Musketeers on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Arena. With the game tied at 63, Xavier drained a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds on the clock to seal the win. With the setback, Georgetown slips to 15-14 overall and 5-11 in BIG EAST play. Xavier improves to 19-10 on the season with an even 8-8 mark in league action.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought my guys played hard. They didn't give up, they kept fighting. We dug a deep hole in the first half but we were able to come back, tie the game with minutes to go and then [Naji Marshall] made that incredible shot."  - Head Coach Patrick Ewing

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jahvon Blair led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 18 points on 5-of-15 shooting including a quartet of 3-pointers.
  • Jamorko Pickett added 12 points and Jagan Mosely tallied 11 to round out those in double figures.
  • Timothy Ighoefe grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to lead the team while Qudus Wahab and Blair each chipped in five.
  • Mosely paced the offense with seven assists to go along with a pair of steals.
  • Georgetown shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field and managed 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was tied early at five as Jahvon Blair and Qudus Wahab each tallied a bucket.
  • Xavier managed 11 unanswered before a Terrell Allen triple pushed the game back to single digits.
  • The Musketeers led by as many as 10 (23-13) before the Blue & Gray reeled off seven straight fueled by a steal and bucket from Jaden Robinson and a jumper from George Muresan. Mosely closed the run on a free throw and layup as the Hoyas trailed 23-20. Xavier held the 28-22 lead going into the break.
  • The second half was a back-and-forth affair with Xavier continuing to hold a comfortable lead but the Hoyas chipping away and making it a two-possession game.
  • Trailing by eight (52-44), Allen and Blair's back-to-back buckets within eight seconds quickly cut the gap to three (52-49), bringing the crowd to its feet and forcing an XU timeout.
  • Down the stretch, it would teeter between a one- and two-possession game until Allen dished it to an open Blair on the right side who drained his 3-pointer to knot the game at 61.
  • The game was tied again at 63 after an Ighoefe tip-in, but a 3-pointer from Xavier's Naji Marshall with 4.5 seconds to play sealed the game and provided the final 66-63.

OF NOTE
  • Mosely's seven assists give him 338 for his career, placing him 14th all-time at Georgetown.
  • Blair's four 3-pointers gives him 138 for his career, surpassing Anthony Perry and Darrel Owens to move up to 12th place on GU's career list.
