BIG EAST Conference Announces Fall Sports Postponement

WASHINGTON – Today the BIG EAST Conference and its member institutions announced that due to the unprecedented and continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, fall sports and competition will not be conducted for 2020. This affects men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, volleyball and field hockey.  The fall competition for sports in their non-traditional seasons, which includes baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis will not be held. Consistent with this announcement, Georgetown's men's rowing and sailing programs will also not compete this fall.

The announcement is in line with the recent communication from President DeGioia regarding a move to virtual education in the fall. The Athletics Department is following the University's current guidance regarding on-campus activities and there will not be in-person team activities at this time. The BIG EAST also announced it will begin to explore conducting our fall sports during the spring if conditions allow. Decisions on winter and spring sport schedules will be made at a later time. The BIG EAST Task Force will continue to monitor COVID-19 conditions across the country and in the BIG EAST communities.

"Today, the BIG EAST Conference announced the decision to not conduct fall sports and competition as well as non-traditional season competition," said Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed. "I understand the incredible sadness and frustration our student-athletes, coaches and staff are feeling upon learning this news and can assure you that I too am disappointed that we will not be competing this fall.  I recognize that the continuation of time without competition is extremely challenging for all of our student-athletes, however, the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, as well as our campus communities remains our highest priority. Since March, I have observed our student-athletes continue to overcome challenges and I know that, despite the latest setback, we will get through this. We remain committed to supporting our student-athletes remotely and will not stop in preparing for the day that we can all safely return to the Hilltop."
