Men’s Basketball Set for Matchup with Longtime Rival Syracuse

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team steps out of conference play on Saturday night to renew its longtime rivalry against Syracuse. Tipoff at the Carrier Dome is scheduled for 7 p.m.

  • Saturday's game can be seen live on ESPN with Dave O'Brien calling the play-by-play and Seth Greenberg providing analysis.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Last time out, Georgetown dropped a 63-55 decision to Butler on Wednesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Jamorko Pickett recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. He also paced the offense with a season-best four assists.
  • Jahvon Blair was also in double figures with 11 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds.
  • Qudus Wahab chipped in nine points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Georgetown out-rebounded Butler 44-32 and shot 42.9 percent (9-21) from 3-point range.
  • Blair leads the Hoyas in scoring with 18.2 ppg, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. He is second in free throw percentage (85.0) and third in 3-pointers per game (2.8).
  • Wahab (12.3 ppg) and Pickett (11.0) are also in double figures, while Wahab is tied for the league lead in rebounding (8.8 rpg) and third in blocks (2.7 bpg). 
  • Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in rebounding (43.6 rpg).

SCOUTING SYRACUSE
  • Syracuse comes in with a 6-2 record and sits at 1-1 in the ACC. The Orange is coming off a 63-60 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday after an 18-day layoff.  
  • As a team, Syracuse is scoring 80.8 ppg and shooting 44.3 percent.
  • Five players are scoring in double figures, led by Alan Griffin (16.4 ppg). Quincy Guerrier (16.1 ppg) and Buddy Boeheim (14.0 ppg) are right behind him. Marek Dolezaj (12.1 ppg) and Joseph Girard III (10.8 ppg) round out the top five scorers.
  • Guerrier leads the Orange with 9.4 rpg, while Dolezaj and Girard are pacing the offense with more than 4.0 assists per game. 
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Saturday will be the 96th meeting between the former BIG EAST rivals with Syracuse leading the all-time series 51-44. The Hoyas have won three of the five meetings since Syracuse joined the ACC.
  • Georgetown won last year's matchup 89-79 at Capital One Arena. Blair hit a trio of 3-pointers off the bench to finish with nine points, while Pickett had five points and tied for the game high with nine rebounds. 
  • Head Coach Patrick Ewing is 1-2 against Syracuse as Georgetown's head coach after going 8-3 versus the Orange as a player. 
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will return home to McDonough Arena on Wednesday, January 13 to host DePaul in a BIG EAST Conference game. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
