WASHINGTON – Returning to Cooper Field after a weekend on the road, freshman Emma van der Veen scored both Georgetown goals in Friday's 2-1 double overtime victory over Quinnipiac University. The Hoyas improve to 8-6 (2-3 BIG EAST) on the season, and Quinnipiac falls to 1-11 (0-5 BIG EAST).
From the Head Coach
"This game matters just like every other game, but if we want to continue our season after our last game on October 31, this is the kind of result we need," said head coach Christy Longacre. "We started off a little flat but we found a way, and we found a way together to get it done. We were able to pull out a win through a little bit of ugliness. It was a good team win, a good team battle and I'm proud of how we stayed in it."
How it Happened
· The Hoyas took the early lead as senior Halle Gill made her way to the baseline and ripped a pass to van der Veen in front of the net. van der Veen placed a shot past Quinnipiac's Mack Vorel to put Georgetown up 1-0.
· Quinnipiac answered in the second quarter when Julianna Cappello took a shot that found its way past senior Ciara Weets in the goal. Cappello was assisted by Micaela Grajales on the goal, and it was the only shot the Hoyas allowed during the period. Georgetown and Quinnipiac headed into halftime tied 1-1.
· Georgetown outshot Quinnipiac 7-2 in the second half but could not find the cage. The Hoyas attempted 11 penalty corners in the half as they kept the offensive pressure up against their BIG EAST opponent. Still tied 1-1 after regulation, Georgetown and Quinnipiac headed to overtime.
· Weets saved all three Quinnipiac attempts on target during the first overtime period and did not allow the Bobcats to score a golden goal. The Hoyas headed into the second seven-on-seven overtime period locked in a battle with Quinnipiac.
· With 4:08 left on the clock, the Hoyas earned penalty corner number 17 on the day. Fifth year senior Ali Cronin passed to graduate student Emma Street who found van der Veen in the scoring circle. van der Veen took her sixth shot of the game and rocketed the ball past Quinnipiac's keeper, ending the game in favor of the Hoyas.
