Hoyas Lose in Penalty Strokes to Saint Francis

WASHINGTON – Coming off a double-overtime win against Quinnipiac on Friday, Georgetown field hockey again found itself in an overtime contest against Saint Francis University on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas lost as they were outscored 2-1 by the Red Flash in penalty strokes. Georgetown falls to 8-7 (2-3 BIG EAST) on the season, and Saint Francis improves to 6-9.

How it Happened

·         The Hoyas scored first off a corner by fifth year senior Ali Cronin who delivered a pass to sophomore Louisa Baxter. Baxter set the ball for senior Sydney Stephenson, who placed a shot past goalkeeper Chloe South. The Hoyas led 1-0 with 5:10 left in the first quarter.
·         Georgetown only took one shot during the first quarter but erupted for seven shots in the second period. The Hoyas could not find the cage but held Saint Francis to zero shots in the second quarter. Georgetown led 1-0 at the half.
·         Shortly after the second half began, Stephenson scored in a nearly identical manner to her first goal of the game. This time, junior Abby English received the pass from Cronin in the corner, and Stephenson unloaded to find the cage. The Hoyas led 2-0 two minutes into the second half.
·         Saint Francis quickly answered as junior Claudia Ortiz scored for the Red Flash, cutting into Georgetown's lead.
·         Freshman Sophie Towne found the cage for the Hoyas before the third quarter ended to push Georgetown's lead back to two. After Stephenson received another pass off a penalty corner, she took a shot that was blocked by Saint Francis's defense. Stephenson gathered the rebound and passed to Towne, and Towne was able to weave through the defense and find a clean look to put the Hoyas up 3-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
·         With 5:38 left on the clock, Saint Francis took advantage of a penalty corner to score and bring the game within one, making the score 3-2.
·         As the game was winding down, the Red Flash continued to pressure the Georgetown defense. Taking a penalty corner with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter, Ortiz found the cage again for Saint Francis. Ortiz redirected a shot that Georgetown's defense had deflected, tying the game at 3-3. The teams ended the regulation period locked in a tie.
·         Despite outshooting the Red Flash 6-2 in the overtime periods, the Hoyas were unable to score. After a double overtime period, Georgetown and Saint Francis headed to a penalty stroke shootout.
·         Graduate student Emma Street was the lone scorer for the Hoyas in the penalty stroke shootout. Freshman Eva Valentini and sophomore Julia Breneman scored their attempts for Saint Francis, giving the Red Flash a 2-1 victory in the shootout.

Of Note

·         The Hoyas played two-consecutive double overtime games this weekend. Georgetown is now 4-1 in overtime games this year, scoring three golden goals and defeating one team in a penalty stroke shootout.
·         Stephenson played a pivotal role in all three Georgetown goals, scoring two from passes off penalty corners. Stephenson assisted on the third goal, which also came from a penalty corner attempt.
·         Goalkeeper Ciara Weets had eight saves in the game and forced three misses in the penalty stroke shootout.
