Sailing Captures Nevins Trophy; Women Compete at Atlantic Coast Championships

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team eked out a win in the Nevins Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, as they claimed the head-to-head tiebreaker when both squads tallied 218 points. The women's squad finished 11th at the Atlantic Coast Championship with 383 points.

ON THE RECORD
"The women's Atlantic coast fleet is just as hard as the national championship so it was very hard to recover from mistakes. We struggled Saturday to get consistent starts but got better over the course of 18 races." - Head Coach Michael J. Callahan on the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship

"We are really happy to have won the Nevins Trophy. The conditions were hard with winds gusting over 30 on Saturday. Both divisions sailed great and it's a testament to the depth we have on the coed team." - Callahan on Nevins Trophy

NEVINS TROPHY (Oct. 16-17; Kings Point, N.Y.; 1st of 18)
  • Georgetown tallied 218 points, tying with St. Mary's College of Maryland, forcing the head-to-head tiebreaker that went to the Blue & Gray for the overall victory.
  • The Hoyas used a four-person overall lineup but switched the crew duties around giving the Hoyas four different lineups in the A and B divisions combined.
  • With Scott Mais as the skipper in the A division, Georgetown had managed six podium finishes in the first nine races, including four wins. One double-digit finish in the 10th race and GU held on to tally 74 points in the A division, good enough for second place.
  • The B division had a rougher start but mixing up the lineups seemed to steady the Hoyas who only had one double-digit finish after the switch, including a trio of wins.
  • A Division (2nd of 18) Lineup: Scott Mais [skipper] with Jack Hogan (1-10) and Kayla Winters (11-17) [crews]
  • B Division (7th of 18) Lineup: Diego Escobar [skipper] with Kayla Winters (1-10) and Jack Hogan (11-17) [crews]

WOMEN'S ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP (Oct. 16-17; Cambridge, Mass.; 11th of 18)
  • The B division was able to find their rhythm quickly, recording seven single-digit finishes in the first nine races, highlighted by a win, followed by a third-place performance in races two and three. The duo of Piper Holthus and Victoria Boatwright faced some setbacks midway through but got back on course as the day closed out to tally 146 points, good enough for sixth in their division.
  • The A division faced tough competition and looked to change its lineup to find the right combination. A rough first half made it difficult for the Hoyas to claw back in, despite a stronger showing in the last nine races, taking 17th in their division with 237 points.
  • A Division (17th of 18) Lineup: Riley Kloc (1-4, 7-18) and Morgan Sailer (5-6) [skippers] with Grace Flanagan (1-2, 5-6), Addi Harris (3-4), Morgan Sailer (7-18) [crews]
  • B Division (6th of 18) Lineup: Piper Holthus [skipper] with Victoria Boatwright [crew]
