WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's soccer lost to Santa Clara 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The hard-fought match was forced into overtime and the Broncos were able to get a second goal to send them to the next round. With this loss, Georgetown's season comes to a close finishing with an overall record of 14-2-6.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"It's disappointing to lose the game. It was a tough game, we were playing the defending national champions who are a very good team and can legitimately go on and reclaim their crown, but it was a good game. I thought in the first half we were slightly better and had better moments. It was definitely a game of halves because of the wind which was a huge factor in the game. In the second half I was happy enough we were able to hold them off and get into the overtime period. Unfortunately, they won the toss for the overtime and chose to go with the wind. They did a good job, they're a well coached team, they didn't panic as they kept moving the ball, never got impatient with it, always probing, and when they got in on the edge of the box, they were able to finish. You have to give their kids credit for finding a way to win the game."
"I am really proud of this group. It is a team that has gotten better as the season went on. Early on in the year we looked like a team that was floundering a bit and we found another gear and pushed on to win the fifth BIG EAST Championship in six years which got us a high seed in the NCAA Tournament. I have no complaints today, I thought the better team won today and that doesn't mean I'm not proud of the effort our kids put in today."
How It Happened
- Georgetown had the first two opportunities with shots from junior Gia Vicari and graduate student Daisy Cleverley which were both deflected by Santa Clara defenders.
- Bronco forward Izzy D'Aquila's shot was saved by Georgetown's goalkeeper Allie Augur in the 11th minute.
- D'Aquila found the feet of fellow attacker Kelsey Turnbow who took a short dribble and placed the ball high right in the back of the GU goal putting the Broncos up 1-0.
- Georgetown kept in it and just six minutes later, the Hoyas earned a corner. Senior Maya Fernandez-Powell was on the kick playing a ball into the six where centerback Sydney Cummings was able to poke the ball past the SC keeper to even the score 1-1.
- Santa Clara had a shot that was deflected off the Blue & Gray's post to close out the half.
- The play was evenly aggressive on both sides in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
- Just minutes from the end of regulation, Santa Clara earned a free kick which was blocked by the goalpost and cleared away, ending the second half 1-1.
- Georgetown did well to begin overtime, but D'Aquila was able to turn her defender for a low left shot on goal putting the Broncos up 2-1, earning her team the opportunity to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
