No. 3 Seed Georgetown Hosts Providence in NCAA Round of 16

WASHINGTON – The third-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will host the Providence College Friars in the NCAA Tournament Third Round on Sunday afternoon at noon at Shaw Field. The nationally-ranked No. 3 Hoyas (17-2) and No. 18 Friars will meet for the third time this season with each team holding a victory in the series.

About the Hoyas
  • Third-seeded Georgetown blanked Georgia State 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championship last weekend at Shaw Field.
  • Junior Dante Polvara scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, before Zach Riviere added the insurance goal with a strike in the 83rd minute of play.
  • This is the ninth trip to the NCAA Round of 16 in program history.
  • Junior Stefan Stojanovic leads the Hoyas with 19 points on nine goals and one assist. Polvara is second with 16 points off of five goals and six assists.
  • The Hoyas have been in the national polls all season.  The final RPI had the Hoyas at No. 3 and the last United Soccer Coaches' Poll put GU at No. 3.  Georgetown sat at No. 3 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's poll on Monday.
About the Friars
  • Providence defeated defending National Champion and 14th seeded Marshall 2-1 in double overtime in the NCAA Second Round last Sunday.
  • Miguel Candela scored his second goal of the season in the 85th minute to tie the game and force overtime. Davis Smith notched the golden goal in the 104th minute off a feed from Brendan McSorley.
  • The Friars' second round victory snapped Marshall's 22-game unbeaten streak at Hoops Family Field.
  • Providence has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in program history while advancing to the College Cup in 2014.
Series Information
  • Georgetown is 20-13-4 all-time against Providence and 11-8-1 at home.
  • Most recently, GU defeated Providence 2-1 in overtime at Shaw Field in the BIG EAST Championship as the Hoyas took the title on a goal from Stojanovic in the 96th minute.
  • Earlier this season, the Hoyas suffered their first loss of the year at Providence in a 3-0 defeat.
  • The teams have never met in the NCAA Tournament.
NCAA Tournament
  • Georgetown is 17-7-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 3-2-2 in the third round as well as holding a 12-4-3 mark at home.
  • Sunday will mark the first time the Hoyas face an opponent in the regular season, the BIG EAST Championship and the NCAA Tournament in one season.
  • The Hoyas have only once faced an opponent from the BIG EAST in the NCAA Tournament, however, during the 2012 campaign Georgetown and Syracuse had not met during the regular season or in the conference championship. That year, the Hoyas advanced to the NCAA Championship game.
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the 10th under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • This is the ninth time the Hoyas have earned a seed in the tournament. In 2019, Georgetown was the No. 3 seed when it won the NCAA championship.
