WASHINGTON – With an impressive season still ongoing, Georgetown University Head Men's Soccer Coach
Brian Wiese and his staff have been recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as the East Regional Staff of the Year announced on Tuesday. The award recognizes the 2021 Regional Staff of the Year winners for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III in both men's and women's soccer.
Each of the 60 coaching staffs receiving Regional Staff of the Year honors will be recognized at the United Soccer Coaches College Coaches Awards Reception on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022 at the convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
In addition, the Regional Staff of the Year recipients will be placed on the United Soccer Coaches ballot for National Staff of the Year consideration within their respective NCAA division.
This is the fifth time in program history that GU has earned the honor and the fourth for Wiese (2019, 2018, 2010) whose 2021 staff includes Assistant Coaches
Mike Casper and
Connor Klekota as well as Volunteer Assistant Coach
Brian Bouhl. In 2012, after appearing in the national championship game, Wiese and staff won the Division I National Coach of the Year award. The current staff was also honored with the national award after winning the NCAA Championship in 2019.
Now in his 16th season on the Hilltop, Wiese has seen the most success in the program's history after placing the program on the national stage as one of the top contenders in the country year after year.
In his tenure at Georgetown, Wiese has coached 27 players who have signed with an MLS squad, two Hermann Trophy finalists, five Hermann Trophy semifinalists, 16 All-Americans, 43 regional All-Americans, 19 BIG EAST Players of the Year and 74 All-BIG EAST honorees as well as both the College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Player.
On the academic side, he has had two Academic All-Americans, three Academic All-Region honorees, two BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes and one Elite89 Award winner.
The team has seen unprecedented success under Wiese with 10 NCAA Tournament berths in an 11-year span. The squad has also won six BIG EAST regular season championships, five BIG EAST Championships and been ranked among the top 25 in 12 seasons including stints at No. 1 in the nation.
Georgetown won both the BIG EAST Regular Season crown as well as the BIG EAST Championship for its fourth in five years. It was just the third time in program history that the squad has won both the regular season and the championship in the same year.
