WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team sent three athletes to compete at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Singlehanded National Championships last weekend with two in the men's competition and one in the women's.
ON THE RECORD
"Broadly speaking, we were happy with the performances of our sailors at the singlehanded nationals. Diego and Piper were small for the conditions but battled hard for every point. I was pleased that Diego won the one light air race of the regatta. Piper was the smallest competitor but her heart and determination came out in every race and her 15th-place finish is a testament to that." - Head Coach
Michael J. Callahan on the overall races
"For Ford, a fourth-place finish is a little disappointing because of his victory at this regatta last year. He was a little off the pace in the wind conditions and had some bad luck in some races. All of that combined to push him just a few points back from the podium. That being said, we are so proud of him and his accomplishments. In his three years competing at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships he has finished first, third and fourth. That's quite impressive." - Callahan on McCann's performance and singlehanded career
ICSA MEN'S SINGLEHANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (Nov. 6-7; Annapolis, Md.; 4th, 10th of 18)
- Ford McCann, the reigning national champion in the men's singlehanded discipline that he won in the spring of 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic shifted fall national championships to the spring, was the top finisher for the Hoyas once again. The first day or racing saw a quick setback for McCann but he got right back on course with a win in race four and closed the first day with a pair of wins highlighting five performances among the top four.
- Poised to finish among the top, McCann had a strong second day but an errant performance in race nine pushed him to fourth place with 84 points.
- Georgetown was one of three institutions with multiple qualifiers joining Hobart and Tulane. Diego Escobar sailed consistently with finishes ranging between eighth and 11th places, but managed a win in the final race of the regatta for a score of 142 points following 14 races.
- Results: 4. Ford McCann, 84; 10. Diego Escobar, 142
ICSA WOMEN'S SINGLEHANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (Nov. 6-7; Annapolis, Md.; 15th of 18)
- Freshman Piper Holthus competed in her first ICSA Women's Singlehanded Championship over the weekend. She managed a seventh-place showing early but couldn't hold on. She was able to find a bit of a rhythm in the final two races, turning in back-to-back 11th-place showings for 193 points.
- Results: 15. Piper Holthus, 193
