Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Georgetown University's men's basketball team made it a two-possession game midway through the second half but that's as close as the Hoyas would get as they fell 80-67 at South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the setback, the Hoyas slip to 3-4 on the season while the Gamecocks improve to 6-2.

ON THE RECORD
"When you play against a Frank Martin team, you know they're going to play great defense. They're going to defend you, their bigs are going to duck in - they were ducking in with a sense of purpose. When you play teams like this, you have to bring your A game and they're bringing their A game, and today our A game wasn't good enough. Even though I didn't think that we played our A game."
 - Head Coach Patrick Ewing

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Donald Carey led all scorers and a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including a 4-for-8 effort from behind the arc and a 4-for-5 performance from the charity stripe. He grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
  • Aminu Mohammed was second on the team in scoring with 17 points (6-for-11 FG) to go along with a squad-best eight boards. The freshman also added a pair of steals and one helper.
  • Dante Harris rounded out those in double figures with 13 points on four buckets and a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line. Harris paced the offense with six assists and added another six rebounds.
  • Georgetown shot 32.9 percent (23-70) from the floor while the Gamecocks shot 45.7 percent (32-70).
  • The Blue & Gray held the edge on the glass 47-43 including 21 offensive boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half saw the Gamecocks jump out to a quick lead that bloated to as many as 12, but a 12-2 run sparked by a Mohammed 3-pointer and capped with a Malcolm Wilson layup, put the Hoyas within two (25-23) with 3:58 remaining in the frame.
  • The Hoyas kept the game within reach through the final minutes of the frame, but two quick USC buckets in the final minute pushed the score to 36-27 at the break.
  • USC came out of the locker room firing but three-straight buckets from Harris, Mohammed and Carey put the game back in striking distance (41-33) just three minutes into the frame.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to push but for every bucket, the Gamecocks had the answer until a conventional three-point play from Harris cut the deficit to six (50-44, 12:32).
  • Both squads would trade baskets with Ryan Mutombo and Collin Holloway fueling the scoring to keep it a two-possession game (57-51, 9:13). However, that's as close as the Hoyas would get as USC extended for the 80-67 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Harris recorded his sixth-straight game with at least 10 points.
