Georgetown to Square Off Against UMBC on Wednesday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will look to bounce back when it faces UMBC on Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. matchup at Capital One Arena. The Hoyas enter the game with a 3-4 record while the Retrievers hold a 5-3 mark.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Aminu Mohammed was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after averaging 16.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 2.5 spg in a 1-1 slate for the Blue & Gray. He shot 52.4 percent (11-21) from the floor and 50.0 percent (2-4) from deep.
  • Mohammed was second on the team in scoring at South Carolina with 17 points (6-for-11 FG) to go along with a squad-best eight boards. The freshman also added a pair of steals and one helper.
  • The Hoya freshman holds the fourth best mark in the conference with 7.9 rebounds per game while ranking inside the top 15 in scoring with 14.3 points per contest (15th).
  • Donald Carey led all scorers and a trio of Hoyas in double figures at South Carolina with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including a 4-for-8 effort from behind the arc and a 4-for-5 performance from the charity stripe. He grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
  • Through seven games, Carey leads the BIG EAST and ranks sixth in the nation with a 95.8 percent efficiency at the free throw line, going 23-for-24 in his opportunities. The Hoya captain also sits in a three-way tie for third in the conference with a 46.9 field goal percentage from behind the arc.
  • Dante Harris rounded out those in double figures with 13 points on four buckets and a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line. The sophomore paced the offense with six assists and added another six rebounds.
  • Harris ranks second among conference competitors with 2.0 steals per game while sitting in a tie for fifth with 33 total assists.
  • As a team, the Hoyas have pulled down a league second-best 12.57 offensive boards per game.
 
ABOUT THE RETRIEVERS
  • UMBC rode a three-game winning streak into its contest against Delaware on Sunday, but dropped the affair, 70-60.
  • The Retrievers lead the country in free throw efficiency, shooting 81.7 percent as a team from the charity stripe while ranking 17th with 10.0 turnovers per game.
  • Keodre Kennedy leads UMBC with 15.1 ppg while sitting second in the America East Conference with 46 total FG made.
  • Darnell Rodgers paces the Retrievers with a 2.21 assist/turnover ratio, 92.0 free throw percentage and 31 total assists.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Wednesday marks the fifth meeting between both teams, with the first meeting (12/16/1987) resulting in an 89-59 GU victory.
  • Georgetown holds a 4-0 record over UMBC, including a pair of wins in each of the last two seasons.
  • In the last meeting on Nov. 25, 2020, Carey was one of four players in double figures, scoring 13 points and pulling down four rebounds in 35 minutes of work.
