Hoyas Down Patriots 2-0 in Season Opener

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's soccer team emerged victorious from its first test of the 2020 season, beating the George Mason Patriots 2-0 on a Thursday night matchup at George Mason Stadium. Goals from senior Grace Nguyen and sophomore Sophie Fox were the difference in a match Georgetown controlled comfortably. The win places the Hoyas at 1-0 to start the season, while the Green & Gold dip to 0-1.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"Obviously everybody was super excited to be back on the field playing competitive games again, [it was a] beautiful night for a game, the girls were ready and raring to go. It's nice to have a win, it's nice to have a shoutout, it's nice to get some kids some minutes. A large portion of the game we controlled really well, we possessed really well. What we needed was a little more on the score sheet to reflect how well we played. I have to give Mason credit; they haven't had an exhibition yet. I thought they got better as the game went on. In the second half it became more of a contest. We had to be on our toes, we had to keep disciplined and concentrated."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue & Gray started positively, with senior forward Jenna Menta creating chances for Georgetown down the right-hand side, and placing George Mason on the back-foot.
  • The Hoyas were awarded a spot kick after sophomore forward Hannah Deljkic drove into the Patriot penalty area, drawing the foul from a Mason defender.
  • Senior Midfielder Grace Nguyen put Georgetown in front with a well-placed penalty kick from 12 yards out, making the score 1-0 with 28:32 to play.
  • Sophomore forward Sofie Fox had a chance to put the Blue & Gray up two after pouncing on the end of a Deljkic pass, but was unable to beat the Patriot keeper.
  • Fox again threatened the George Mason net when she intercepted a loose pass from a Patriot defense, but her resulting effort was just wide of the far post.
  • The Hoyas would go into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.
  • Menta continued to attack the George Mason defense once play resumed, dribbling down the left flank, cutting onto her right foot, and bringing out a save from the Patriot keeper.
  • Again, Menta contributed to another scoring chance for the Hoyas when she crossed a low ball from the George Mason byline, finding sophomore forward Gia Vicari whose effort went over the crossbar.
  • GU's second goal came courtesy of graduate student midfielder Daisy Cleverley, whose inviting cross was headed home by Fox to give a 2-0 lead to the Blue & Gray with 15:08 play in the second half.
  • The Hoyas would manage a few more shots, but failed to capitalize as the match would end 2-0 in favor of Georgetown.

OF NOTE
  • Nguyen scored her first goal for Georgetown since returning from an injury that kept her out of the 2019 season.
  • Fox recorded her second career goal in GU colors.
  • The Hoyas out-shot the Patriots 13 to five, with seven of those shots forcing saves from the George Mason keeper.
  • The Blue & Gray won 18 corners throughout the match, with George Mason earning only two.
