Hoyas Best Colonials 4-0 in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team showcased its scoring prowess in their opening home match of the 2020 season, beating the George Washington Colonials 4-0 in a rainy Sunday afternoon matchup at Shaw Field. Goals from sophomores Gia Vicari and Julia Leas––as well as senior Grace Nguyen––propelled Georgetown into the win column. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-0, while the Colonials begin the season 0-1.

COACH NOLAN ON
  • His side's attacking output: "I think the most important thing is to improve each time you step on the field. I felt this was a marked improvement from our game Thursday against George Mason. On the attacking side. I felt that every time we attacked, we felt that we could score. I was really happy with the movement of our front group."
  • Giving playing opportunities to younger players: "When you put younger players on the field, you want to give them the chance to be successful. I picked moments where they can get their feet wet. When we got our third goal, GW stopped chasing. The early goal in the second half really helped [as well]."
  • GU's readiness for conference play: "I think [we're] as ready as we can be given the circumstances around this long year. I'm happy we have a couple of home games to open [conference play] up, each time we step on the field we get a little bit better."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started frantically, as both teams looked to acclimate to the heavy rain and wet conditions.
  • At the 34:36 mark, Vicari scored the first goal for Georgetown with a low-driven shot into the bottom left corner after running onto a pass dispatched by senior Jenna Menta.
  • After the restart, GU began to push for a second goal, but Menta's shot from outside the box sailed just wide of the net.
  • The Hoyas' attack broke through again at the 23:56 mark, with Nguyen scoring the second of the game––and her season––with a shot that skimmed across the grass into the bottom right of the GW goal.
  • GW failed to trouble the Blue & Gray net, as Georgetown enjoyed the share of possession as the second half wound down.
  • GU would head into the halftime interval up 2-0.
  • The Hoyas began the second half aggressively; with 42:43 on the clock, Leas pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box after GW was unable to clear a Georgetown corner kick.
  • At 38:18, Vicari would score her second of the game, beating the keeper after entering GW's box down the left-hand side, making it 4-0 to the home team.
  • Georgetown pressed for a fifth, but the Hoyas' shot attempts weren't able to beat the Colonial goalkeeper.
  • GU stood strong defensively and was able to keep a clean sheet as the second period ended, 4-0, at Shaw Field.

OF NOTE
  • Nguyen scored in her second-consecutive game for the Hoyas this season, the first coming in last week's matchup at George Mason.
  • Vicari scored her first two goals in Hoya colors and also earned her first two points of the season.
  • The Hoyas out-shot the Patriots 16-5, with eight of those shots landing on target.
  • The Blue & Gray won 10 corners throughout the match, with George Washington earning only three.
