Hoyas Fall to Drexel in Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team allowed a big second-half run as the squad fell 21-9 to the Drexel University Dragons in the season opener at Cooper Field on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Hoyas fall to 0-1 on the young season, while the Dragons improve to 3-0.
Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "When we are put into difficult situations we just need to step up and compete. This was a tough loss today, credit to Drexel they played harder than we did today. We aren't going to dwell on this, though, we need to build from this game and not let it define us. We will move past it and try to get better every single day."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the game with a 4-1 run as senior Caroline Frock and graduate student Michaela Bruno both connected on the score.
  • Following a Drexel goal, freshman Kylie Hazen got into the action with back-to-back scores in her first game on the Hilltop to make it 4-1. The first came off of a free position attempt and she powered through the left side to the goal on the second.
  • The Dragons tied it up with three-consecutive scores but junior Jordan Sabourin stopped the run with a goal at 21:10, and classmate Annabelle Albert cut to her left and sliced through the defense to add her first of the contest and make it 6-4.
  • Georgetown would add one more before the half as graduate student Liza Liotta cut down the middle and took the assist from Sabourin on the left side, but Drexel managed three as the teams went into the break tied at seven.
  • The second half belonged to the Dragons as the visitors went on a 13-1 run. Georgetown's lone goal came from Frock through a wide open lane down the middle at 25:05.
  • Late in the contest, Sabourin added a goal on the right side but Drexel matched again making the final 21-9.
Of Note
  • Frock, Hazen and Sabourin led the way with two goals apiece, while Sabourin also added an assist.
  • GU was outshot 41-25 and forced 10 turnovers while committing 16.
  • Drexel held a slight 16-15 advantage in draw controls, as graduate student Natalia Lynch pulled in five and freshman Emma Driggs tallied four.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven tallied 11 saves in her first-career start making some spectacular stops, while Zoe Bennett had 10 saves to her credit.
