Georgetown Takes Down Delaware 14-8

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team cruised to the 14-8 victory against the University of Delaware Blue Hens on Friday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The contest was GU's first road game of the 2021 season. With the win the Hoyas improve to 1-1 on the young season, while the Blue Hens move to 1-3.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "We battled today and, while it was not perfect, we played and improved from last week. It was really good for the team to get a win under our belts."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring with a goal from freshman Katie Goldsmith curling around the left side.
  • Delaware managed a quick two, but the Blue & Gray nailed goals just 22 seconds apart as freshman Kylie Hazen found the back of the cage and junior Jordyn Sabourin scored from the middle of the crease.
  • The Blue Hens answered with a 3-0 run to take the 5-3 lead but the Hoyas did not back down.
  • Sabourin's second of the afternoon at 10:56 sparked a 3-0 run as graduate student Michaela Bruno added a score and Hazen managed her second as the Blue & Gray went into the break leading 6-5.
  • Graduate student Liza Liotta got on the board less than two minutes into the second half curling from behind the cage to get the score.
  • Delaware scored less than a minute later but the rest of the half would belong to the Hoyas.
  • Bruno connected with Hazen at 27:09 to begin a 4-0 run as Georgetown tried to pull away.
  • With less than 10 minutes to go in the game, Delaware mounted a comeback with back-to-back scores but that was quickly stopped by a Hazen goal from close range as well as Albert's third of the contest.
  • Georgetown would hold on for the 14-8 final.
Of Note
  • Four Hoyas managed a hat trick as Bruno, Sabourin, Albert and Hazen all had three goals apiece.
  • Hazen also had a trio of assists for six points in the game, while Albert added one for four points on the afternoon.
  • GU outshot Delaware 35-19 and forced 21 turnovers while committing 19.
  • Georgetown held the 14-10 advantage in draw controls, as freshman Emma Driggs pulled in five and Sabourin tallied four.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven tallied four saves in the win, while Kate Brewster had seven saves to her credit.
