WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team scored four goals in their second-consecutive game, besting the Seton Hall University Pirates by a score of 4-0. Sophomore
Gia Vicari scored her fourth goal in two games, while sophomore
Sofie Fox also contributed to the scoresheet. After their win, the Hoyas improve to 3-0, 1-0 in conference play, while the Pirates fall to 1-1 and 0-1 in conference play. With the victory, Coach
Dave Nolan now boasts 100 BIG EAST wins since his arrival to the Hilltop in 2004.
COACH NOLAN ON
- His 100th BIG EAST win: "I think it was just important for us to get the BIG EAST season off to a good start, and get three points in the bag. You've got to win your home games in the conference, so we did that. We scored some goals, which we're trying to get better at. It was good to get as many kids on the field as we did today."
- His team registering 10 goals in their opening three games: "Because of how we play and the system we play, we like to dominate the middle of the field. If you can dominate the middle of the field and dominate the ball, I feel you're always going to have chances if you have more of the ball.
- His squad rotation: "It's a tough situation, it's a tough season. The girls are dealing with challenging circumstances each day, and we're trying to reward kids who train hard and work hard, by trying to find time for them whenever we can. So we're cognizant of the fact that we want to keep winning, we want to get better, we want to develop players, but we also have to reward the other kids who come everyday with a good attitude."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown grabbed the first goal of the game after SHU were unable to clear a Hoya corner; Vicari was in the right place as the loose ball fell to her and was able to smash it in from close range.
- With 24:09 on the clock, graduate student Kaitlyn Parcell received the ball at midfield and played a calculated pass into the feet of senior Jenna Menta, who surged her way into the Pirate penalty area. The Hoyas then benefitted from a stroke of luck as a Seton Hall defender looking to dispossess Menta guided the ball into her own net to make it 2-0.
- GU would head into the halftime break with a convincing 2-0 lead.
- Menta was once again the focus of Georgetown's attacking play as she quickly moved into the SHU penalty area from the left-hand side as she beat her mark, dribbled to the byline, then cut a pass back for Fox who tucked the ball in the back of the Pirate net, making it 3-0.
- Rounding off the scoring for the Hoyas was Vicari who slotted the ball just over the reach of the Seton Hall keeper after freshman Tatum Lenain split the Pirate defense with a decisive through ball.
- SHU struggled to create chances throughout the game, and the Blue & Gray was the 4-0 winner at the end of 90 minutes.
OF NOTE
- Vicari scored her fourth goal for GU in her last two matches, putting her total point tally at eight for the season.
- The 4-0 victory puts Georgetown at 10 goals throughout its opening three matches, seven better than last year's tally at this same point.
- The Hoyas out-shot the Pirates 16-0, with six of those shots landing on target.
- The Blue & Gray won eight corners throughout the match, with Seton Hall earning only one.
