Hoyas Fall Short at No. 3/3 Villanova 84-74

VILLANOVA, PA. – The Georgetown University men's basketball team fell 84-74 to No. 3/3 Villanova on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Finneran Pavilion. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 5-9 on the season and 3-6 in league play, while the Wildcats improve to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference action.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jahvon Blair led four Hoyas in double figures with 18 points and tied for game-high honors by dishing out five assists.
  • Qudus Wahab tied his career high with 17 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the floor, and pulled down seven rebounds.
  • Jamorko Pickett and Chudier Bile each finished with 12 points, while Pickett grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
  • The Hoyas shot 50.9 percent (29-57) from the floor and outscored Villanova 36-20 in the paint.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a back-and-forth affair at the start, as the Hoyas scored on each of their first five possessions. Blair and Wahab each contributed four points out of the gate.
  • After the Wildcats pulled ahead 17-10, Blair knocked down a pair of treys to keep GU within striking distance.
  • Trailing 30-20, the Hoyas scored nine unanswered over nearly four minutes, led by five points from Bile, to pull within one.
  • Two free throws from Donald Carey eventually tied the game at 33 before a Bile layup capped a 15-3 run to give Georgetown a 35-33 lead.
  • Villanova scored the final four points to take a 37-35 lead at halftime.
  • Bile opened the second half with a 3-pointer and the score remained a one-possession game over the first five minutes as Wahab poured in seven points.
  • The Wildcats took a 60-54 advantage, but a trey from Dante Harris and deep jumper by Pickett fueled a quick 6-0 run to knot things up.
  • Baskets by Harris and Wahab, and a deep 3-pointer from Blair put GU up 67-66 with 5:46 remaining, but Villanova responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead 75-69.
  • Pickett hit a pair from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to five at 78-73, but the Wildcats hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
 
OF NOTE
  • Blair connected on a 3-pointer for the 27th-consecutive game, and his four treys give him 186 for his career, moving past Jason Clark (184) and putting him fifth all-time at Georgetown, one behind Austin Freeman (187).
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HOYAS
The Hoyas will return home for their third-straight game against a ranked opponent when they host No. 15/12 Creighton on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on CBSSN.
