WASHINGTON – The No. 16/25 Georgetown University women's soccer team had a scoreless first half but was able to find its scoring touch in the second, as the Hoyas beat the Villanova University Wildcats 2-0. Sophomore
Gia Vicari scored her fifth goal of the season, while graduate student
Daisy Cleverley scored her first goal in Georgetown colors. After its win, GU improves to 5-0, 3-0 in BIG EAST conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 1-5-1 and 0-2-1 in conference play.
COACH NOLAN ON:
- His team's ability to keep clean sheets: We manage possession of the ball very well, if you look at the games we play, the possession statistic is 60 percent or higher for us. When you have the ball it's harder for the other team to score...we obviously have a good set of defenders, they're all experienced...I feel having all the players there and having a team that manages the ball very well are two of the things that make us hard to score against. We're a pressing team, we press from the front, and we don't give teams a chance to settle into a rhythm.
- How his attackers are able to get into scoring positions: We have good players in attacking positions. Grace Nguyen and Maya (Fernandez-Powell) and Daisy, coming from deeper areas is always going to create chances. We're trying to get our forwards to find the pockets of space we want them to be in––knowing our midfielders will get them balls in those pockets of space.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Jenna Menta fashioned Georgetown's first opportunity of the game, but the BIG EAST's Goalkeeper of the Week, Megan McClay, was able to get down quickly to corral the shot.
- Minutes later, Fernandez-Powell had a chance of her own, but once again McClay stood tall to tip the shot away for a GU corner kick.
- With 29:09 on the clock, a Fernandez-Powell set piece rolled into the path of junior Devon Lis at the top of the Wildcat box, but Lis' effort sailed over the crossbar.
- With just under four minutes to play in the first half, junior Jenna Royson surged down the right side and squared a pass to Vicari around the penalty spot, but Georgetown's top goal scorer was unable to redirect the ball goalwards.
- In the dying seconds of the first period, a GU long pass dropped kindly for Vicari but McClay was equal to the shot, holding onto the effort.
- Both teams went into the halftime break level at 0-0.
- The Blue & Gray had the first breakthrough of the match when Vicari dribbled the ball down the right side, beat her mark at the byline, then passed the ball across the face of goal for Cleverley to finish.
- Senior Kelly Ann Livingstone had a chance to double the Hoya lead, but was denied by the crossbar with 23 minutes to play.
- With 15 minutes to play, Nguyen attempted to add her third goal of the season with a shot from just outside the box, but the effort did not trouble McClay.
- Vicari scored her fifth goal of the season at the 9:48 mark when Menta burst into the Wildcat box and slid the ball across to Vicari for an easy tap in.
- The Blue and Gray defense stood strong, preventing any serious goal threats from the VU attacking unit; the game would end 2-0 in GU's favor.
OF NOTE
- With her goal today, Vicari's goal tally now stands at five for the season.
- Menta's assist puts her at four for the season––two more than any other Georgetown player (Kaitlyn Parcell, 2).
- The Hoyas' clean sheet is its fifth in as many games; the GU backline has yet to concede a goal this season.
- GU out-shot the Wildcats 12-4, with seven of those shots landing on target.
- The Blue & Gray won 11 corners throughout the match, while conceding only one to VU.
