Fox Goal Pushes Hoyas Past Red Storm 1-0

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team continued its impressive defensive run, keeping another clean sheet during a 1-0 home victory over the visiting St. John's Red Storm. Sophomore Sofie Fox scored the only goal of the match, tallying her third strike of this campaign. After their win, the Hoyas improve to 6-0, 3-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Red Storm fall to 5-2 and 2-2 in conference play.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"Today the most important thing was the three points, which we managed successfully to do. St. John's is a very good team, a very well-coached team, with two very special players in Kajan and Garziano. I thought we did a real good job of dealing with those two today. In particular, our two center backs did a great job of handling Kajan, because she's a handful. The midfield, they did a good job of always being around Garziano whenever she had the ball. I felt overall for us, our two fullbacks––Jenna Royson and Kaitlyn Parcells––put in an outstanding shift working the sidelines, up and down, and helping us through the outside...I feel like we're a tough team to stop because we can hurt you in so many ways; we're dangerous on set pieces, our outside backs get forward, our goals come from a variety of players, so I like where we are right now."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started cautiously, with neither able to gain an edge through the opening 15 minutes of play.
  • Senior Jenna Menta dispatched GU's first attempt of the contest, firing a shot at the St. John's goal, but was unable to hit the target.
  • Eight minutes later, the Hoyas had another chance to take the lead after a bouncing ball in the Red Storm area was not cleared; attempts from Kelly Ann Livingstone and Gia Vicari from close range were blocked by the St. John's defense.
  • Moments later, Vicari received the ball on the left and––after cutting inside to beat her mark––fed the onrushing Sofie Fox, who latched onto the pass, surged into the Red Storm box, and found the back of the net.
  • SJU had a few attempts at the Georgetown net, but none were troubling for the Hoya defense, as GU would head into the halftime break up 1-0.
  • A few minutes after the restart, Royson dribbled her way into the Red Storm penalty area and drew a foul from an eager SJU defender, resulting in a penalty kick.
  • Grace Nguyen stepped up to the spot, placed her shot to the right of the goalkeeper, but was unable to find the net as the Red Storm netminder palmed the ball out of play.
  • St. John's would push for an equalizer, but the BIG EAST's most sturdy defense remained strong, seeing out a 1-0 win for the Hoyas.

OF NOTE
  • With her assist, Vicari now has 12 points on the season, more than any other GU player.
  • The 1-0 victory ensures Georgetown's defense remains unbeaten throughout the first six games of the campaign; they are the only BIG EAST team yet to concede a goal.
  • The Hoyas out-shot the Red Storm 14-2, with five of those shots landing on target.
  • The Blue & Gray won five corners throughout the match, with St. John's earning only one.
