Georgetown Downs Villanova, 18-8

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team defeated the Villanova University Wildcats 18-8 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Wildcats dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.

  • "I thought we came out really strong. This was our first experience playing two games on a weekend and I thought we responded really well and came out with a lot of energy. We executed well today and overall I think it was a great team win."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring on a 4-0 run as senior Ali Diamond would take the pass from freshman Kylie Hazen at 27:03 to get on the board.
  • Junior Annabelle Albert had two goals on the run and Diamond tallied an assist as GU controlled the tempo from the opening draw.
  • Following a Villanova goal, graduate students Natalia Lynch and Michaela Bruno would combine for back-to-back scores to make it 6-1 midway through the period.
  • Villanova would score again, but over the final 10 minutes of the half the Blue & Gray would manage a 4-1 run.
  • Senior Mary Pagano sparked the run on the pass from junior Jordyn Sabourin, and Diamond tallied two for the hat trick to make the score 10-3 at the half.
  • The Wildcats found the back of the cage early in the second half with two quick goals, but Albert's third of the contest began a 4-0 run that concluded with back-to-back scores from Sabourin.
  • After a VU goal, the Hoya offense came right back with from three of its own as scores from senior Mary Pagano, Bruno and freshman Lauren Lisauskas made it 17-6.
  • Villanova had a small comeback left, but it would be sophomore Kaylan Silva whose free position goal would put the score at 18-8 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Diamond and Bruno led the way with three goals and two assists apiece as Albert and Lynch also tallied hat tricks on the afternoon.
  • On the defensive end of the field, graduate student Katie Hudson had an impressive day with six caused turnovers and five draw controls to her credit.
  • Georgetown outshot Villanova 40-21 and held the 17-11 advantage on draw controls. The Hoya defense forced an impressive 27 turnovers.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven tallied five saves combining with sophomore Emma Spraggins for the win.
