Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 12/9 Georgetown Draws with Friars

WASHINGTON – The No. 12/9 Georgetown University women's soccer team generated chances, but was unable to beat a stubborn Friar defensive unit as the Hoyas tied Providence 0-0. After their draw, the Hoyas move to 8-0-1, 6-0-1 in conference play, while PC settle at 5-2-1 and 3-2-1 in conference play.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"It was a tough game. Providence is a good team with a dangerous front line. They play pretty direct and they caused us a lot of problems with that because of the unpredictability of second balls. We had Lauren Gallagher to thank for making a really good save when they did get in behind. On our side, we weren't at our best and we just had to battle and grind out a result. We had plenty of dangerous moments, a lot of set pieces, but to be fair Providence defended the set pieces really well. By the end of it I think the draw was a fair result and I think both teams were probably happy not to lose the game. It means it's another shutout, it's another point on the road against a good team, and now we just have to go get ready for a home game against Villanova on Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Looking to grab the game's first goal, both Georgetown and Providence began the match exchanging shots, but neither team was able to produce a clear-cut chance through the opening 10 minutes.
  • At the 25:15 mark, the Friars came close to gaining the lead after the ball was worked into the Hoya penalty area; a shot from 12 yards out struck a GU defender, but senior goalkeeper Alyssa Navarrete showcased her sharp reflexes and batted the ball to safety.
  • Nearly 10 minutes later, senior Jenna Menta received the ball on the left-hand side of the pitch, cut inside to beat her mark, then dispatched a shot just wide of PC's front post.
  • With neither able to break the deadlock, both squads went into the halftime break with the scoreline 0-0.
  • Two minutes into the start of the second half, a well-weighted through ball allowed Providence to surge into the GU penalty box and produce a shot, but graduate student Lauren Gallagher was equal to the effort.
  • At the 30-minute mark, the Friars broke behind the Hoya defense again, but Gallagher produced a one-on-one stop to stifle the first effort, then parried the rebound, to ensure the score stayed at 0-0.
  • With 23 minutes to play, Menta carried the ball from the midfield to the Friar endline, cutting the ball back for an onrushing Gia Vicari, but a PC defender did enough to redirect the ball away from Vicari's foot.
  • At the 4:30 mark, a long pass from the Providence midfield called Gallagher into action again as she broke up another scoring opportunity for the Friars; with the forward bearing down on goal, Gallagher dove at the feet of the PC forward and smothered the ball.
  • That was the last clear-cut chance for either side as both teams would head into the overtime period tied at 0-0.

OF NOTE
  • GU and PC equaled each other in both shots and shots on target, striking 15 apiece and fashioning four on target.
  • The Blue & Gray won 10 corners throughout the match, with Providence earning just five.
