WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team struck first and held on to continue its winning start to the season, besting the Providence College Friars 1-0 on a brisk Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The sole goal of the contest came from sophomore
Julia Leas, her second of the campaign. The win places the Hoyas at 4-0, 2-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Friars drop to 3-1, and 1-1 in conference action.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"This was a very good performance, against a good team. We really came out strong and set a great tone early. In many ways it was our best performance of the year, and we are getting better every game. However, at 1-0 the result is never certain and we had to maintain concentration as Providence started to take chances and push people forward. Thankfully we managed the game well and came away with three important BIG EAST points. Now we head out on the road to play an always tricky Villanova team on Thursday for another big game." -Coach
Dave Nolan on his side's performance against Providence.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown began patiently during the opening 10 minutes, but during the next five the Hoyas registered four shots and four corners, providing the first real goal-scoring chances of the match.
- At the 23:38 mark, junior Maya Fernandez-Powell whipped in a corner from the opposite side of the field, finding Leas at the penalty spot where she successfully redirected the ball past the Friar goalkeeper, making it 1-0
- The Blue & Gray had another chance just minutes later, with senior Jenna Menta impeded just outside the penalty area; graduate student Daisy Cleverley stepped up to take the freekick, but her shot fell wide of the far post.
- At the conclusion of the first half, GU was 1-0 up.
- After the restart, senior Grace Nguyen attempted to continue her goalscoring form, taking a shot from just inside the PC penalty area, but a Friar defender was able to meet the shot before it could test the goalkeeper.
- Georgetown's defense stood strong, forcing Providence's shot attempts to come from distance.
- Neither side was able to break through in the second period and the game's final score was 1-0 in the Hoyas' favor.
OF NOTE
- GU outshout providence 17-4, with two of their shots finding the target.
- The Hoyas earned seven corners and only conceded one to PC.
- With Leas' goal, she now has four points on the season; her other goal coming during a 4-0 home win against George Washington last week.
- With the 1-0 win, the Blue & Gray have scored six more goals at this point in the season than they did last year.
