Top-Seeded Hoyas to Face Creighton in BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the Creighton University Bluejays (6-5, 5-3 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Championship Semifinal matchup on Thursday afternoon scheduled for noon at Shaw Field. The nationally No. 2/1 Hoyas are currently 7-0-2 on the season and in league play.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas managed a 1-0 victory over St. John's on Saturday to secure the top seed in the East Division as well as the overall high seed to host the postseason event.
  • Junior Giannis Nikopolidis was named the Goalkeeper of the Year for the second-consecutive season.  Rio Hope-Gund was the Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomore Dante Polvara earned Midfielder of the Year honors.  Nikopolidis, Hope-Gund and Polvara joined seniors Derek Dodson and Jacob Montes on the BIG EAST First Team. The Blue & Gray led all schools with five first team honorees.  Additionally, senior captain Sean Zawadzki earned a spot on the second team for the second-consecutive year, and senior Paul Rothrock along with sophomore Will Sands both were named to the third team.
  • On Monday, Nikopolidis was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, while Zawadski earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Honors.  Additionally, Polvara was tabbed for the Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Polvara is currently leading the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points.
  • In goal, Nikopolidis and senior Ethan Koehler have combined for a 0.52 goals-against average and five shutouts on the year.
  • Georgetown is currently ranked No. 2 in the country by the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 1 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. The team is also No. 1 in the RPI.
About the Bluejays
  • The Bluejays head into the postseason after securing the No. 2 slot in the BIG EAST Midwest Division. Creighton went 5-3-0 during league play with home-and-home contests against the other four division teams (Butler, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier).
  • Senior Diego Gutierrez led the Bluejays during the regular season and tied for the lead in the BIG EAST with 16 points from five goals and six assists.
  • Gutierrez earned the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year award, while a total of five Bluejays made the all-conference teams.
  • In addition to his individual award, Gutierrez made the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Charles Auguste, Duncan McGuire, Musa Qongo and Callum Watson each made the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Series Information
  • The Hoyas are 5-3-2 all-time against the Bluejays and 3-1-2 at home.
  • The last meeting was a 1-1 draw during the 2019 season at Shaw Field.
  • The lone postseason matchup was a 2-1 double overtime win at Shaw Field during the 2015 campaign.
BIG EAST Championship
  • The Hoyas are 18-19-6 overall in the BIG EAST Tournament and 12-1-2 at home as well as 7-7-2 in the semifinal game.
  • Georgetown is 1-0-0 all-time against the Bluejays in the postseason.
  • The winner of Thursday's game will play in the championship against the winner of No. 1 Midwest Marquette and No. 2 East Seton Hall on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on FS2.

  • All Georgetown men's soccer home games are currently scheduled to be played at Shaw Field. In accordance with Washington, D.C. regulations which limit the size of in-person gatherings, fans are regrettably not permitted to attend home games at this time.
