Tonas Shuts Down St. John’s in Georgetown’s 5-1 Win

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating St. John's 5-1 on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm drop to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Angelo Tonas was very strong on the mound for the Hoyas, going 7.0-plus shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
  • Anthony Redfern picked up the save with a pair of strikeouts.
  • AJ Lotsis led the offense with a pair of hits, including a double.
  • Christian Ficca was on base twice with an RBI single and a walk, while Conor Nolan also reached via a pair of walks.
  • The Hoyas finished with eight hits, including a pair of doubles.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of two-out hits. Lotsis doubled off the left field wall before Willis drove him in with a single.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Conor Nolan led off with a walk and stole second base. Ficca then delivered a one-out RBI single to center to put GU up 2-0.
  • The Hoyas loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, error and hit-by-pitch. Adam Dapkewicz reached on another error that allowed a run to cross the plate before Patrick DeSalvo lined a two-run single into left-center field to make it 5-0.
  • Tonas, meanwhile was cruising on the mound. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and only allowed three baserunners through the first seven frames. He had four perfect innings, including striking out the side in the second, and struck out at least one batter in six of his seven innings.  
  • St. John's loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the eighth, but Jacob Grzebinski struck out two batters and forced a ground out to strand the runners.
  • The Red Storm got a run in the ninth, but Redfern closed the door for his first career save.
 
OF NOTE
  • Friday was the first win in a Georgetown uniform for Head Coach Edwin Thompson.
 
UP NEXT
  • Georgetown and St. John's will continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader consisting of a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning contest. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
  • The games will be played in Frederick, Maryland at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
