Baseball Comes Back for Exciting 6-4 Win Over St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team scored five runs in the seventh inning to come back and defeat St. John's 6-4 on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the victory, the Hoyas win the series 3-1 and improve to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Red Storm fall to 11-10 overall and 2-5 in league action.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Michael Eze led the GU offense with a pair of hits and was on base three times. He also drove in two runs while scoring twice.
  • Tony Barreca had two hits and Eddie McCabe was on base three times with a hit and two walks.
  • Nolan McCarthy made his first start in a Georgetown uniform and went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out nine.
  • Owen Lamon earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. John's opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-out double and single to take a 1-0 lead.
  • A two-run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth extended GU's deficit to 4-0.
  • The Hoyas had opportunities, including loading the bases with one out in the fourth, but hit into three double plays over the first five innings to end any threats.
  • Georgetown broke through for a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eze led off with a walk and went to third on a single by McCabe. AJ Lotsis drove him home with a sacrifice fly to cut the Red Storm lead to 4-1.
  • The offense exploded in the seventh as a walk, single and error loaded the bases with one out. Eze plated two runs with a single up the middle before Lotsis put the Hoyas in the lead with a two-run single of his own. A fielder's choice and throwing error allowed a fifth run of the inning to score, giving GU a 6-4 lead.
  • Jacob Grzebinski came on to get the final out in the ninth inning to secure the win. It is his first save of the season, and fourth of his career against St. John's.
