Hoyas Swept in Friday Doubleheader

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Friday, falling to Creighton by scores of 6-0 and 5-0 in BIG EAST Conference action. With the losses, the Hoyas slip to 3-7 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Bluejays improve to 13-7 on the season and 5-0 in conference action.
 
Game 1: Creighton 6, Georgetown 0 (7 innings)
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Angelo Tonas started on the mound and went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits. He struck out three.
  • Chase Walter fired 2.0 perfect innings of relief, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
  • Eddie McCabe was on base twice with a walk and a single.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Creighton got on the board in the first inning with an unearned run.
  • The Bluejays added four runs in the fourth inning and one more in the seventh.
  • The Hoyas did not manage a hit until the fourth inning, and had only three baserunners in the game.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jack Weeks started and went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
  • Jae Gnazzo allowed just one run in 2.1 innings of relief. Mauricio Rodriguez fired a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut
  • McCabe was again on base twice with a single and a walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run.
  • Weeks was strong early, allowing just the one hit over the first four innings while striking out six.
  • The Bluejays scored three runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • The Hoyas had their chances on offense, putting runners on base in six of the first seven innings and having a runner in scoring position three times.
  • A Creighton run in the eighth inning provided the final score.
 
UP NEXT
  • The two teams will continue their series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
  • The games will be played at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland.
