Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Second-Half Run Propels Hoyas Past Bulldogs

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team used a huge second half to pick up the Senior Day 18-7 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in the second of a two-game series at Cooper Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-9 overall and 0-8 in league play.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "Butler came out really hard putting us on our heels, and our emotion on Senior Day made us tentative. We regrouped in the second half, we came out and did a much better job led by our seniors. It was nice to be able to end with our seniors on the field."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown started strong with free position goals from senior Caroline Frock and graduate student Michaela Bruno to begin the game.
  • Butler came right back, however, with a 3-1 run to tie the game at three at the 6:36 mark in the first.
  • The Blue & Gray would keep regaining the lead, but Butler always had an answer as a Bulldog goal with 31 seconds remaining tied the game at five at the half.
  • Butler opened the scoring in the second, but a goal right in front of the cage from junior Celia Walsh knotted it at six.
  • Freshman Kylie Hazen got into the act minutes later, before back-to-back goals from senior Mary Pagano gave GU its largest lead of the game at 9-6 and forcing a Butler timeout.
  • The goals just kept coming as the Bulldogs began to tire and Georgetown would not slow down.
  • GU piled on the goals late as Walsh's goal sparked the 13-0 run.
  • Butler would score in the final seconds to make the score 18-7 for the day.
Of Note
  • Hazen led the way for the Hoyas with four goals, while Bruno, Lynch and Pagano all had hat tricks on Senior Day.
  • Bruno also managed two assists, while Lynch had a solid day with six draw controls and three caused turnovers to her credit.
  • Georgetown outshot Butler 41-17, and had 15 draw controls to the Bulldogs' 10.
  • The Hoya defense forced 20 turnovers.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven and graduate student Micheline DiNardo combined for nine saves on the afternoon.
Up Next
  • Georgetown will hit the road to close out the regular season with a two-game series at UConn next weekend. The Hoyas and Huskies will meet at 3 p.m. on Friday before battling in a noon contest on Sunday. Both games and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
