Georgetown Comes Back for 10-Inning Win Over Creighton

WASHINGTONAJ Lotsis scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Georgetown University baseball team to a 3-2 win over Creighton on Sunday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 4-8 overall and 4-6 in league play, while the Bluejays drop their first BIG EAST game and slip to 14-8 on the season and 6-1 in conference action.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nolan McCarthy started on the mound and went 8.0 innings, a season high for the Hoyas. He allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter.
  • Chase Walter fired 2.0 scoreless innings in relief for the win.
  • AJ Lotsis had a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, and added two RBIs and two runs scored
  • Michael Eze was on base twice with a pair of walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Creighton opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the third.
  • The Hoyas had their chances at the plate, putting a runner on base in each of the first five innings, including the leadoff man four times.
  • The offense finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning as Eddie McCabe led off with a single. Lotsis worked a full count before launching a two-run home run over the fence in left-center to tie the game 2-2.
  • McCarthy, meanwhile, was cruising on the mound, facing the minimum number of batters over his final five innings including retiring 12 straight at one point. He allowed just two singles after the third inning, with the runners being erased on a double play and a caught stealing.
  • In extra innings, the teams started with a runner on second base. Creighton moved the runner over with a bunt before lifting a fly ball into right field. Eze made the catch and then threw a strike to the plate to throw out the runner trying to tag.
  • Lotsis started at second base in the bottom of the 10th and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Patrick DeSalvo. Andrew Ciufo then lifted a sacrifice fly to right as Lotsis beat the throw home with a headfirst slide to win the game.

UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas will step out of BIG EAST play on Wednesday for a midweek matchup at George Washington.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Arlington, Virginia.
  • The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved back one day.
