Baseball Falls Late to GW 5-4

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team had a season-high 10 hits, but George Washington scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Hoyas 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon in Arlington, Virginia. With the loss, GU slips to 4-9 on the season while the Colonials move to 17-10.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Patrick DeSalvo had his first career multi-hit game with three singles. He also stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.
  • AJ Lotsis recorded his fifth multi-hit performance of the season with a pair of singles and Alex Rosen also had two hits.
  • Jake Hyde and Michael Eze were both on base twice.
  • Everett Catlett started and fired 4.0 strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out two and walked two.
  • Kevin Gates struck out one in a scoreless inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Colonials got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
  • Georgetown answered right back in the top of the fourth as a walk to Adam Dapkewicz and singles by Andrew Bergeron and Hyde loaded the bases with one out. Alex Rosen hit a grounder to short, but the throw to second was wild as two runs crossed the plate to give GU a 2-1 lead.
  • GW tied the score with a run in the sixth inning, but the Hoyas again answered right back. DeSalvo led off with an infield single and stole second. With one out, he scored on an RBI double from Christian Ficca.
  • In the eighth inning, Lotsis started a two-out rally with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on DeSalvo's third single of the day, a line drive into centerfield, to push the lead to 4-2.
  • The Colonials came back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth off a pair of GU relievers to take a 5-4 lead.
  • Georgetown put the leadoff man on in the ninth inning, but could not push across the tying run.

OF NOTE
  • Hyde's fourth-inning single was the first hit of his career.
  • The Hoyas put out a young starting lineup that consisted of five freshmen and three sophomores. Bergeron and Hyde both made their first career starts.

UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas will travel to Seton Hall this weekend for a four-game, three-game BIG EAST series. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., and the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday (noon) and a single game Sunday (noon).
