BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped its season opener on Wednesday evening, falling to Virginia Commonwealth University 13-4 in a nonconference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-1 while the Rams improve to 15-11.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Andrew Ciufo came off the bench and went 2-for-2, including a pinch-hit home run in his first career at-bat. He finished with a team-high three RBIs.
- Conor Nolan, making his Georgetown debut, also had two hits including a double.
- Andrew DeRoche and Carter Bosch fired scoreless innings of relief, while Bosch and Nolan McCarthy each had two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run home run. The Rams extended the lead with an unearned run in the third inning, two more in the fourth and one in the fifth.
- The Hoyas came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning as Matt Stone launched a solo home run over the left field wall to lead off the frame.
- With two outs and Eddie McCabe on first, Ciufo homered to left to cut the deficit to 6-3.
- The Rams broke the game open with seven runs over the next three innings.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Ciufo beat out an infield single on a slow grounder to third as Michael Eze crossed the plate.
OF NOTE
- Thirty-one players got into the game for the Hoyas, including 11 pitchers and 20 position players.
- Seven Hoyas made their collegiate debut, with Eze picking up his first career hit with a seventh-inning single.
- Five others made their GU debut.
- Wednesday was Georgetown's first game under head coach Edwin Thompson.
UP NEXT
The Hoyas will open BIG EAST play this weekend, hitting the road for a four-game series at UConn. The two teams will open the weekend on Friday night at 6 p.m. before playing a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday afternoon.
