WASHINGTON – The University of Connecticut hit a home run in the seventh inning to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team 10-0 on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference game at Elliott Ballpark in Storrs, Connecticut. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Huskies move to 15-12 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Eddie McCabe and AJ Lotsis each had two hits to pace the GU offense.
- Angelo Tonas started on the mound and went 3.0 innings, striking out two while allowing four runs on five hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UConn opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as three-straight batters reached with two outs, resulting in a pair of runs.
- The Hoyas threatened early, putting two runners on in the first inning and loading the bases in the third, but could not break through.
- The Huskies tacked on two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. They added three more in the sixth and then hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh to win via the mercy rule.
OF NOTE
- Friday was the first time the two teams had met since UConn had left the BIG EAST following the 2013 season.
UP NEXT
The two teams will continue their BIG EAST-opening series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is set for noon. The first contest will be a seven-inning affair while game two will be nine innings.
