WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team used a season-high 11 hits and dominant pitching from
Carter Bosch and
Jacob Grzebinski to come away with a 5-1 victory over Xavier on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup in Cincinnati. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-19 on the season and 5-15 in conference play, while the Musketeers fall to 21-22 overall and 12-9 in league action.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Bosch started and pitched 5.0 shutout innings. He struck out eight, while allowing just two hits. He had multiple strikeouts in three of his five innings, including striking out three in the fourth inning.
- Grzebinski fired a season-high 4.0 innings with five strikeouts for his second save. He gave up one run on three hits.
- Andrew Bergeron led the Hoya offense with two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base.
- Christian Ficca also had two hits, including a double, while Jake Hyde, Alex Rosen and AJ Lotsis were all on base twice with a hit and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the second as a Hyde walk and Ficca single put two runners on before Andrew Ciufo singled in a run.
- A pair of unearned runs crossed the plate in the third inning when Adam Dapkewicz reached on an error, giving GU a 3-0 lead.
- Eddie McCabe launched a solo home run in the fourth inning before Hyde delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth to score Bergeron, who had singled and stolen second, and make it 5-0.
- Xavier got a run back in the bottom of the seventh but Grzebinski slammed the door, striking out the side in the ninth to record the save.
UP NEXT
- The Hoyas and Musketeers will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at noon. The second game will not count toward the BIG EAST standings.
