GW Tops Hoyas

WASHINGTON – In a game that featured 29 total walks, the Georgetown University baseball team dropped a 15-4 decision to George Washington in the final nonconference game of the season. The game was played at GW's Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia, concluding a 15-game road swing for the Hoyas. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 5-22 on the season, while the Colonials move to 26-14.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • On a planned staff day, the Hoyas used nine pitchers. Joe Henry made his collegiate debut and fired 1.2 innings in relief, striking out three.
  • Kevin Gates allowed just one unearned run in 1.1 innings and Michael Morrissey struck out three in an inning of work.
  • Eddie McCabe was on base five times with two singles and three walks.
  • AJ Lotsis was also on base four times with three walks and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Patrick DeSalvo had a hit and a walk, while also driving in a run and scoring once.
  • Ray Ortiz doubled in the second inning for his first career hit.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Washington scored three runs in the first inning to open the scoring.
  • The Colonials took advantage of six walks and two hits to extend its lead to 9-0 in the second inning, and tacked on a 10th run in the third.
  • The Hoyas loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, but could not come up with the run-scoring hit. They loaded the bases again in the fourth and Alex Rosen drove in Calvin Rucker with an RBI fielder's choice.
  • Matt Stone led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on a single by Patrick DeSalvo to make it a 10-2 game.
  • GW answered with two runs on five walks in the fifth, and added an unearned run in the sixth to take a 13-2 lead.
  • James Gabor walked in the seventh and eventually scored when McCabe reached on an infield single and the throw went into the dugout. A bases-loaded walk to Nolan Matsko forced home another run.
  • Single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for GW provided the final 15-4 score.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas will wrap up the 2021 season with a home series against Butler this weekend.
  • The games will be played at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
