Bergeron’s Walk-Off Single Gives Hoyas Split of Thursday Doubleheader

COLLEGE PARK, Md.Andrew Bergeron delivered an RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Georgetown University baseball team a 5-4 win in game two of Thursday's BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Butler. The Bulldogs took game one by a 2-0 score. With the split, the Hoyas improve to 6-23 on the season and 6-17 in conference play, while Butler moves to 12-23 overall and 6-13 in league action.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jae Gnazzo fired a complete game, allowing just two unearned runs on three hits while striking out six.
  • Eddie McCabe led the offense with two singles and stole two bases.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Butler scored the only runs of the game in the fourth inning, as two unearned runs came across.
  • The Hoyas put runners on base in each of the final four innings, but could not break into the run column.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jack Weeks started and lasted 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs with one strikeout.
  • Angelo Tonas came on in relief and fired 5.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out four and retired the first 11 batters he faced.  
  • Chase Walter pitched a shutout inning and Jacob Grzebinski struck out one in 1.2 scoreless innings.
  • AJ Lotsis had a double and single, while Calvin Rucker also had two hits to pace the offense.
  • Andrew Ciufo singled and scored two runs, and Bergeron had two RBIs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Butler hit three solo home runs in the first two innings to take a 3-0 lead.
  • The Hoyas responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Lotsis led off with a ground-rule double to right. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Jake Hyde.
  • In the fifth, Ciufo and Patrick DeSalvo were each hit by a pitch to lead off, and then moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Bergeron. A sacrifice fly from McCabe and error allowed both runners to score and tie the game at three.
  • The Bulldogs retook the lead in the seventh with another solo home run.
  • Georgetown answered right back as Ciufo singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third. Bergeron lifted a fly ball to left for the sacrifice fly to knot the score 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Alex Rosen led off with a pinch-hit single. Michael Eze pinch ran and went to second after a one-out walk to DeSalvo. Bergeron delivered the game-winning RBI single with a grounder in left field, scoring Eze to give GU the 5-4 win.
 
UP NEXT
  • The two teams will play a single game on Friday with first pitch scheduled at 1 p.m.
