Baseball Falls to Villanova at Citizens Bank Park

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but the comeback fell short as the Hoyas dropped the opening game of the weekend 6-4 to Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Friday afternoon. The game was played at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies. With the loss, GU slips to 4-15 on the season and 4-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats improve to 16-12 overall and 4-9 in conference action.

  • Andrew Ciufo was on base twice with an RBI and a stolen base, while Christian Ficca was also on base twice with a single and a walk

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Villanova opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. The Wildcats would tack on two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to take a 5-0 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh, Ciufo was hit by a pitch, stole second and went to third on an errant throw. He came all the way around on an RBI single by Tony Barreca.
  • The Hoyas put together a two-out rally in the eighth for another run. Michael Eze was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single by Nolan. Ciufo then drove him in on an RBI single of his own to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • The Wildcat scored a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Ficca and Yareb Martinez each singled with one out in the ninth before McCabe scored them both with a double into the right-center field gap to make it a 6-4 game and bring the tying run to the plate. However, consecutive strikeouts ended the comeback bid.

UP NEXT
  • The two teams will resume their three-game series on Saturday with a single game at Villanova's home field, Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
