WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team dropped the series finale 2-1 to Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 4-16 on the season and 4-12 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats improve to 18-12 overall and 6-9 in conference action.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Nolan McCarthy put in a strong start on the mound, firing 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs. He struck out six and walked none.
- Chase Walter threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout.
- Andrew Bergeron led the offense with a single and double, as well as two stolen bases.
- The Hoyas stole four bases on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Villanova took a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
- The Wildcats added another run in the fourth on a single and double, but McCarthy stranded a runner at third with a key strikeout and popup.
- The Hoya offense answered in the top of the fifth as Patrick DeSalvo and Bergeron both singled with one out. Andrew Ciufo eventually drove in a run as he beat out a ground ball to the shortstop to make it a 2-1 game.
- The Blue & Gray got a runner on base in the ninth, but could not score the tying run.
UP NEXT
- The Hoyas will play their third-straight BIG EAST series on the road, traveling to Cincinnati next weekend for a four-game set at Xavier.
