No. 1/1 Georgetown Battles No. 7/20 Maryland on Saturday Presented by PNC Bank

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team (4-0) will host local-rival the No. 7/20 University of Maryland at Shaw Field on Saturday in a highly-anticipated matchup presented by PNC Bank. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) presented by SoFi on FloSports with Georgetown men's soccer alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser back in the broadcast booth for their 17th season.

  • The BIG EAST Conference has announced an agreement with leading sports streaming service FloSports to become the home of the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi for the 2021-22 academic year. BEDN will feature all men's soccer conference games and nonconference Hoya matches will also be available on the network.   • Georgetown is 4-0 to start the 2021 season and is coming off of a 2-0 Labor Day Weekend.
  • A week ago, the Blue & Gray downed Syracuse in New York, 1-0.
  • The lone goal of the game came from sophomore John Franks as he received a long pass from the left side played by junior captain Dante Polvara. Syracuse keeper Russell Shealy came out of the box and Franks fired to the right post burying the ball to make it 1-0 in the 58th minute of action.
  • Senior Giannis Nikopolidis picked up the shutout in the net, despite no saves, marking his second of the season.
  • For his defensive efforts against Syracuse, freshman Kieran Sargeant was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday.
  • Later that afternoon, GU welcomed Santa Clara to Shaw Field where the Hoyas won 1-0 on a goal from Sargeant in the 59th minute marking his second of the season and his career.
  • Graduate student Ethan Koehler picked up the shutout in the net with three saves, marking his first of the season.
  • On Tuesday, Sargeant also earned TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week honors.
About the Terps
  • Maryland is 4-0 and coming off of a 2-1 win against Virginia at Audi Field last weekend.
  • Sophomore midfielder Ben Bender earned Big Ten Offensive of the Week honors on Tuesday after a 2-0 week for the Terps.
  • Bender scored a goal and added an assist as UMD downed George Mason 2-0 on Friday before defeating UVA on Monday.
  • Bender leads Maryland with five points on the season.
  • In the preseason polls, Maryland was just outside of the top-25 according to the United Soccer Coaches' poll, getting the highest amount of votes of any team not included in the ranking. The Terps were picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten by the conference's head coaches.
