Georgetown Set to Host Harvard in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team returns to Cooper Field on Saturday afternoon, hosting Harvard University in the 2021 home opener at Cooper Field. The Hoyas and Crimson will match up for the first time since 2017 in a contest that will kick off at 12:30 p.m.

  • Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Jeremy Huber calling the play-by-play and Emory Hunt providing analysis.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas come in with a 1-0 record after defeating Delaware State last weekend in a 20-14 overtime thriller.
  • Joshua Stakely scored the game-winning touchdown, rushing for all 25 yards in the extra period.
  • Conor Hunt was selected the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 41.7 yards on nine punts while hitting both his PAT attempts.
  • Joseph Brunell and Justin Fonteneaux were both named Patriot League Honorable Mention.
  • Brunell finished 18-of-32 passing for 197 yards and had touchdown passes to Sergio Portobanco and Cameron Crayton.
  • Fonteneaux tied with Ahmad Wilson for the team lead with 12 tackles while adding an interception and blocking a field goal in overtime.
 
SCOUTING HARVARD
  • Saturday will be the season opener for Harvard, and the program's first game since 2019.
  • The Crimson are picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League and return 35 letterwinners, including eight starters, from two years ago.
  • Leading Harvard's returners are 2019 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Aidan Borguet as well as four other all-conference players.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Saturday will be fifth all-time matchup between the two programs, with all four previous meetings coming in the 2014-17 seasons.  
  • Harvard has won each of the first four contests, including the most recent game in 2017 which was played at RFK Stadium.
  • The Hoyas are 5-11 against the Ivy League since 2014 and have won the past two after defeating Columbia and Cornell in 2019.
  • This will be the first of two-straight matchups against Ivy League opponents as Georgetown travels to Columbia next weekend.
 
COMING UP NEXT
Georgetown will head back out on the road on Saturday, September 25 when the squad travels to New York City for a game at Columbia. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. It will be the sixth rendition of the Lou Little Trophy, with the Blue & Gray having won three of the first five contests including a 24-10 win over the Lions in 2019.
