Hoyas Drop Pair at Virginia Tournament

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the first day of action at the University of Virginia Tournament on Friday in Charlottesville. The Hoyas fell in the opener 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 26-24, 17-25, 15-12) to Fairleigh Dickinson before losing to the host Cavaliers 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 26-24) to close out the day.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Against Fairleigh Dickinson, Mary Grace Goyena led Georgetown with a match-high 22 kills while adding five blocks and four digs.
  • Brennan Wilhite and Giselle Williams both notched eight kills for the Hoyas with Chanelle Smith adding six.
  • Emma Plutnicki had a double-double for the Blue & Gray with 49 assists and 11 digs to go with four blocks.
  • Georgetown out-blocked FDU 14-4 on the day as Smith was credited with seven rejections and Wilhite five.
  • Jessica Cusi continued to impress in the back row, hauling in 23 digs. Elissa Barbosa added 13 and Williams matched Plutnicki's 11.
  • Against Virginia, Barbosa paced the Blue & Gray with nine kills and five digs.
  • Defensively, Cusi collected another 14 digs while Smith was credited with six blocks again.
 
Fairleigh Dickinson Notes
  • Madsyn Beirne posted a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs to lead the Knights while Sophia Spiridonakos added 16 kills.
  • Hannah Schmidt added a double-double with 48 assists and 14 digs, Allegra Rivas had 28 digs and Miriam Stingl joined the group with 10 digs.
  • The win was Fairleigh Dickinson's first against the Hoyas in program history.
 
Virginia Notes
  • Mary Shaffer led the Cavaliers with 10 kills while Grace Turner added nine.
  • Madison Morey collected 13 digs and both Abby Tadder and Alana Walker had five blocks.
 
Side Out
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday as they wrap up the tournament and nonconference play against Bellarmine at 11:30 a.m.
