WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team opened up the Fall 2021 season earlier this month and has continued into its second-straight weekend of competition last weekend. The initial weekends of competition saw the Hoyas finish among the top four in every regatta as well as wins at the Riley Cup and Chesapeake Invitational. The coed team is currently ranked No. 4 in the country while the women come in at No. 12.

FAYE BENNET MAISA WOMEN'S SINGLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIPS (Sept. 18-19; Annapolis, Md.; 4th out of 12)
- Competing in 14 races over two days, Piper Holthus finished fourth in her first MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championships totaling 62 points and just two points out of third.
- The freshman opened with five podium performances in six races. Facing tough competition in the middle, she got back on course and closed the regatta with another three podium finishes.
- Holthus now awaits the announcements of at large bids to the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Championships.

CHESAPEAKE INVITATIONAL (Sept. 18-19; St. Mary's City, Md.; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 13th out of 18)
- Sending a fleet of competitors and showing their depth, the Hoyas took four out of the top five spots as five different Hoya lineups competed in eight races over two days at the Chesapeake Invitational.
- Hoyas 1 totaled 58 points, using an impressive B division performance to boost the Blue & Gray into first place (40 points A Division, 18 points B Division).

RILEY CUP (Sept. 11-12; Norfolk, Va.; 1st, 6th of 15)
- Over two days of racing, Georgetown's top squad won in commanding fashion, totaling 51 points from the A and B divisions while the second GU contingent finished sixth with 114 points total
- In the A division, the Hoyas led wire to wire, turning in only winning and runner-up performances in all but one of the nine races for 15 points across the board.
- Tinkering with the lineup a bit in the B division, Georgetown won a pair of races before a slight skid in races 5-7 and closed with a pair of top-five finishes for 36 points.The second GU contingent in the B division opened the races with a win and following a setback in race two, managed top-five finishes in the final six races for 42 points and a fifth-place division finish.

LASER SOUTH (Sept. 11-12; Annapolis, Md.; 2nd, 6th of 18)
- Competing in 14 races over the two-day regatta, Ford McCann and Diego Escobar finished second and sixth, respectively, in the 18-person regatta. McCann and Escobar, along with all others who finished among the top nine, qualified for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Conference Championship.
- McCann quickly recovered following a fifth-place showing in race one, moving up to third in race two followed by a trio of wins in races three, four and five to close the gap to two on the leader. McCann had a firm hold on second place, finishing with 41 points behind a quartet of wins and 10 races among the top three.
- In 14 races, Escobar managed four finishes among the top five to tally 106 points in his first collegiate regatta.

NAVY WOMEN'S (Sept. 11-12; Annapolis, Md.; 3rd of 8)
- Following two days of racing on Bembe Beach of the Annapolis Harbor, the Georgetown women finished third overall behind 167 total points from the A and B divisions.
- The Hoyas started well in the A division, finishing among the top five, including one winning race and a pair of runner-up performances in the opening five races, but couldn't hold on to that momentum through the end, claiming just a pair of top-five finishes over the final seven races. The Hoyas managed 76 points in the A division for third place.
- The B division saw more of the same for the Blue & Gray on its opening weekend, highlighted by a win in the fourth race and capped with runner-up finishes at the beginning and end. With 91 points, the B division finished fourth in the eight-team field.

UP NEXT
Georgetown sailing heads to Ithaca, New York for a two-day regatta hosted by Cornell University on Sept. 25-26. The MAISA Top Nine welcomes the top nine in the conference on the women's and coed sides. Georgetown will also compete in the MAISA Match Race Championships in Annapolis, Maryland and hosted by the Naval Academy on Sept 25-26.
