WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 27-25) to DePaul in its 2021 BIG EAST opener on Friday night. The Hoyas fall to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Blue Demons improve to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
"We saw some good things in our first conference match in two years," Head Coach
David Heller said. "Makayla added some great offense and blocking for us at times. We were a bit too streaky today. We would go on long runs then allow DePaul to be scrappy and claw back at us. Giselle sparked some points for us early in set three that put us in a good position. Jess really added some service pressure tonight. She's been working on it and it really got them out of system tonight to help our block. Peyton and Lilly did a really good job of slowing down their outside attackers. Our pieces are coming together and now we just need to sustain it for an entire match."
Hoya Highlights
•
Mary Grace Goyena led Georgetown with six kills while
Elissa Barbosa and
Makayla Serrett both had five.
•
Emma Plutnicki posted a double-double with 14 assists and 12 digs in just two sets of action.
• Defensively,
Jessica Cusi paced the Hoyas with 13 digs.
• Georgetown had 10 blocks with Serrett leading the way with five and
Peyton Wilhite adding four.
How it Happened
• Keeping things close through the course of the opening frame, DePaul kept the Hoyas at bay before closing out the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-20.
• A back-and-forth second set quickly turned to the Blue Demons advantage, winning 13 of the last 14 points of the set after a 15-12 Hoya lead midway through the stanza.
• Georgetown controlled the third set early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead to force a DePaul timeout and was up by five late at 19-14. The Demons rallied back out of a timeout, slowly chipping away at the Hoya advantage to force extra points. Both squads fought off a set point, but DPU came out on top at the end 27-25.
DePaul Notes
• Jill Pressly led the Blue Demons with 12 kills and 20 digs for a double-double.
• Emma Price added 11 kills while Donna Brown had 10 kills and seven blocks.
