Hoyas Take Down Brown University in Penalty Strokes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Georgetown University field hockey team won against Brown University in penalty strokes on Sunday afternoon after the game remained tied through two overtime periods. The Hoyas improve to 4-5 on the season after splitting their weekend matchups in Rhode Island.

From the Head Coach
"This is the first time we can from behind and won this season," head coach Christy Longacre said. "It is a great reflection of this team's growth and resilience that we continue to work at each week. Today our underclassmen really stepped up in key moments and it makes me very excited for the future of this program."

How it Happened
·         After a contentious first quarter, Brown led 1-0. The Bears nearly scored off a corner as Dani van Rootselaar took a shot from just outside the shooting circle, but the goal was disallowed. Brown ran a nearly identical play off a penalty corner 12 minutes into the period and van Rootselaar secured the goal for the Bears.
·         Georgetown's Vivienne Trumpbour appeared to tie the game with a minute and a half left in the quarter, but the goal was called off as the Hoyas were tagged with an illegal pass. The Hoyas and the Bears were scoreless in the second period, heading into the half with Brown leading by a goal.
·         The Hoyas came out strong in the second half, immediately pressuring Brown's defense. Three minutes into the third period, freshman Emma van der Veen scored off a penalty corner. Assisted by senior Sydney Stephenson, the Hoyas tied the game 1-1.
·        With three minutes left on the clock, freshman Sophie Towne took a breakaway downfield and juked the goalkeeper, but her shot was blocked by a Brown defender. The Hoyas and the Bears headed into overtime tied at 1-1.
·         The game remained scoreless through the two overtime periods despite the Hoyas taking eight shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ciara Weets posted four saves in extra time to keep Georgetown tied with Brown.
·         The Hoyas then went to penalty strokes, where they bested Brown 4-3 in the shootout. Weets forced two misses in the shootout, giving Georgetown an opportunity to take the victory. Four Hoyas scored their penalty strokes to seal the win: Vivienne Trumpbour, Emma van der Veen, Emma Street and Elena Leahy.

·         The Hoyas outshot the Bears 7-1 in the third quarter, with six shots on goal. Georgetown outshot Brown 24-13 in the game.
·         Georgetown attempted 18 penalty corners to Brown's five, capitalizing on one in the third to score the game-tying goal.
