Women's Tennis Competes at Bedford Cup to Open Fall Season

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's tennis team opened its fall season this weekend at the Bedford Cup in College Park, Md., hosted by the University of Maryland. The Hoyas faced competition from nine universities in the weekend tournament.
 
Singles Results
·         Olivia Ashton lost to New Jersey Institute of Technology's Amira Badawi in two sets, and then fell to Virginia Commonwealth University's Gabriela Davidescu. Ashton also faced University of Delaware's Eliza Askarova but lost in two close sets.
·         Avantika Willy fell to Julieta Honrubia of Delaware in two sets to start her weekend of play. Willy then played Gabriela Davidescu of VCU and dropped that match.
·         Chloe Bendetti fell to Stella Wiesemann of George Washington University in her only singles match of the weekend.
·         Nadine Del Carmen beat Coppin State University's Iva Jankovic in three sets before falling to NJIT's Sandra Dzhambazov. Del Carmen then faced up against GW's Sarah Bodewes and emerged victorious.
·         Agata Mikos beat James Madison University's Shannon McCarthy in two sets, then fell to NJIT's Advaita Saravanan. Mikos went on to beat GW's Charlotte Bell in her next matchup.
·         Morgan Coburn beat Towson University's Elessa Jacobs before falling to GW's Katarina Marinkovikj. Coburn went on to win two more matches, first against Loyola's Genevieve Wurtz and then Howard University's Yemisi Ifederu.
·         Brooke Murphy had a strong showing that began with a win against Coppin's Mackenzie Jones. Murphy then beat Loyola's Ronnie Gruseck in three sets before falling to Loyola's Jessica Bodewes.
·         Carmen Aizpurua rounded out the weekend, notching two wins for the Hoyas. Aizpurua took down Loyola's Brooke Santoriello in consecutive 6-0 sets, then fell to Loyola's Jessica Bodewes. Aizpurua won against Loyola's Ronnie Gruseck before losing to GW's Lara McNaughten.
 
Doubles Results
·         Georgetown's Ashton/Willy duo won against Towson's Jacobs/Pospicschill, then took down NJIT's Saleh/Salvi before losing to Delaware's Svendsen/Honrubia. The Hoyas then took down George Mason University's La/ Yang before falling to Delaware's Askarova/Montana.
·         Bendetti/Coburn fell to a double made up of Delaware's Viva Laas and NJIT's Amira Badawi. After the loss, The Hoyas turned it around and won two straight matches against GW's Bodewes/Ramirez and NJIT's Saleh/Salvi.
·         Mikos/Del Carmen beat NJIT's Saravanan/Dzhambazov, then fell to Howard's Grayson/Butcher. The pair then faced GW's Thompson/McNaughten and fell to duo from George Washington.
·         Murphy/Aizpurua bested Loyola's Thompson/Kemerer, then Howard's Simunyola/El Sherif before falling to GM's Crowell/Splett. They faced off against GW's Thompson/McNaughten but fell in a 7-5 set to finish Georgetown's weekend slate of matches.
 
Up Next
·         The Hoyas travel to Annapolis, Md. next weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships. The ITA Regionals will be held from October 1-4.
