Comeback Bid Falls Short at No. 21/21 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Georgetown University men's basketball team fell, 83-75, at the No. 21/21 Providence College on Thursday evening at Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Hoyas are 6-9 overall with a 0-4 mark in BIG EAST action while PC improves to 15-2 with a 5-1 BIG EAST record.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Donald Carey made an emphatic return, registering a game-high 21 points to go along with seven boards and four steals in 35 minutes of action. The Hoya captain tied a career-high with five triples, matching his mark set against St. John's (12/20/20).
  • Kaiden Rice added 19 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and 5-for-7 from distance in 21 minutes of work.
  • Aminu Mohammed rounded out the Hoyas in double figures with 12 points while pulling down six rebounds.
  • As a team, the Hoyas went 13-of-23 from the distance (56.5%) while shooting 10-of-11 from the charity stripe (90.9%).
  • GU also forced more turnovers (12-10) and took advantage of the miscues (20-12).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carey hit a triple to open the scoring for GU before Rice hit a pair from distance to cut the Hoya deficit in half, 18-9.
  • The Hoyas slashed the Providence lead to 25-20 with seven unanswered points, forcing the Friars to call a timeout (6:41).
  • Tyler Beard capped off a 6-0 Hoya run to end the half with a buzzer-beating trey, sending GU into the break trailing, 37-34.
  • Jalin Billingsley drained a turnaround jumper while being fouled before completing the three-point play (14:51).
  • GU went on a 7-0 run in which Carey scored five points, pulling the Hoyas to within nine, 58-49 (9:53).
  • Harris scored four of six unanswered points by the Hoyas, cutting the Friar lead to four, 64-60 (5:09).
  • Rice tallied eight of the team's final 10 points, but it was not enough to complete the comeback before falling 83-75.
 
OF NOTE
  • Tonight marked the sixth time this season the Hoyas have recorded more than 10 triples in a game.

Georgetown returns home to take on No. 11 Villanova on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Capital One Arena.
