Georgetown to Open BIG EAST Play Against Marquette

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team (6-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) will take on the Marquette University Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Friday, January 7 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Capital One Arena. Friday will mark the team's first game in nearly three weeks since facing TCU on Dec. 18.

  • Friday's game will be broadcast live on FS1 with Eric Collins calling the play-by-play and Dickey Simpkins providing analysis.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown enters the game having won three of its last four despite its 80-73 setback to TCU in the BIG EAST/Big 12 Battle.
  • Aminu Mohammed led three scorers in double figures with his BIG EAST-leading fifth double-double of the season, registering 21 points and 11 boards in 34 minutes of action. Kaiden Rice added 14 points while Donald Carey scored 12 to round out double-digit scorers.
  • With four triples against the Horned Frogs, Rice remains second in the nation with 4.3 treys per contest.
  • As a team, the Hoyas rank 15th in the NCAA in 3-point efficiency, draining 39.2 percent of their shots from behind the arc.
  • The Blue & Gray has four players ranked among the BIG EAST top 20 in scoring as Mohammed leads the way with 14.6 ppg (10th), followed by Rice (14.5 ppg, 11th), Carey (12.8 ppg, 17th) and Harris (12.8 ppg, 18th).
  • Carey remains one of the nation's leading free throw shooters, posting a sixth-best 93.9 percent efficiency to also pace the BE.
  • Mohammed continues to lead the BIG EAST with 8.7 rebounds per game and five total double-doubles this season.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
  • After losing four-straight games, Marquette stunned No. 16/17 Providence with a dominant 88-56 win at home.
  • Kur Kuath leads the conference and ranks inside the nation's top 15 with 47 total blocks (5th) for 3.1 blocks per contest (11th).
  • Tyler Kolek paces the BIG EAST and sits 13th in the country with 6.1 assists per game while his 2.2 assist/turnover ratio is second among conference competitors.
  • Justin Lewis tops Marquette with 15.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest while averaging 31.7 minutes a game.
  • The Golden Eagles lead the league with 16.6 assists per contest, while sitting 10th in NCAA with 249 total helpers.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Friday will be the 32nd all-time meeting between Georgetown and Marquette with the Golden Eagles holding a slight edge overall, 17-14, while GU is 7-6 at Capital One Arena against the visiting squad.
  • The Hoyas snapped a three-game skid against Marquette with their 68-49 opening round victory in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament. Jahvon Blair led all scorers with 20 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes off the bench. Donald Carey and Dante Harris combined for 12 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals in the tournament opener.
  • GU Head Coach Patrick Ewing and MU Head Coach Shaka Smart will face off for the second time since the Hoya legend took over the program. Ewing bested Smart on Nov. 21, 2019 when Georgetown knocked off No. 22 Texas, 82-66, at Madison Square Garden behind four players in double figures and the Hoyas shooting 50.9 percent (28-55) for the game. GU held the Longhorns to just 37.7 percent shooting from the floor (23-61), including a 22.2 percent clip (6-27) in the second half.
