No. 17/12 Hoyas Earn 10th Straight Shutout with Win over Villanova

WASHINGTON – The No. 17/12 Hoyas beat the Villanova Wildcats 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Georgetown rises to 10-1-4 overall and 6-0-1 in conference and Villanova falls to 3-7-1 overall, 2-4 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Today was a tough game against a well coached Villanova. Never an easy place to play. I thought we started brightly and controlled most of the first half. The two notable plays were another goal from Julia off a corner kick and more importantly a penalty kick save from Cara Martin which kept our shutout streak alive. However, while we dominated the game for large parts we never could get the second goal which would have helped us all breath easily. Credit to Nova, they kept going and we had to manage the game down the stretch which we did very well. Now it's on to Providence for another tough battle versus the Friars who are a well coached team with some dangerous attacking players."

About the Match

  • The two sides went back-and-forth with possession to the half with both the Hoyas and Wildcats goalkeepers having to make two saves.
  • Cara Martin made two saves in the second half to keep Villanova scoreless as GU forced Villanova's keeper Megan McClay to make five saves.
  • One of Martin's four saves included a penalty kick by Villanova, her first PK situation of her collegiate career.
  • Leas defended her Defensive Player of the Week title from the past two weeks by helping the Hoyas clinch their 10th straight shutout.
