Georgetown Boasts Two Strong Finishes Over the Weekend

The Georgetown Sailing Team continued its impressive start to the season with two more solid finished last weekend

On the Record - Head Coach Mike Callahan

  • "The Atlantic Coast Round 1 is sort of a survive and advance event. Winning would be great, but you can't help but sail more conservatively to ensure a top-nine finish.  Now we move on to the ACC Championship against the top 18 teams in the country and I'm excited to see how we do."

Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1 - (6th of 18)

  • The top nine teams from Round 1 compete for the Atlantic Coast Championship on October 22-23 at the US Coast Guard Academy.
  • The team struggled a bit at the start of the event and at the end, but the Hoyas managed to string together some impressive finishes in the middle.
  • At the end of the first day, the Blue & Gray were comfortably in the top nine and very close to first overall.
  • The strong winds Saturday made way to light and very fluky winds on Sunday that saw big wind shifts and lots of strange wind patterns.
  • The Hoyas struggled a bit to connect the wind shifts and slipped to sixth overall but were never in danger of finishing outside the top nine.

On the Record - Head Coach Mike Callahan

  • Coach Mike Callahan was impressed with their performance.
  • "Danny and Grace sailed a basically flawless event. They were quite good in all conditions and I'm thrilled for them that they won this event."

Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta - (1st, 4th, 7th, 14th,16th of 18)

  • The coed team also competed at the Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta at Georgetown.
  • Tom Curtis '68 was a famous sailor and, until last year, the only sailor in the Georgetown Athletics Hall of Fame.
  • He died tragically in a sailing accident in 1979 and the regatta has been held in his honor for 35 years.
  • The Hoyas always look to win their home events and sent a strong group to the Curtis Regatta.
  • Over the course of eight races the Hoya team of Danny Hughes and Grace Flanagan beat out Navy, Old Dominion and St. Mary's to win the event.
  • Over eight races, the duo scored no worse than fourth and won the final two races by a wide margin.

Up Next

  • This weekend the Hoya women's team travels to the US Merchant Marine Academy to compete in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship.
  • The coed team will head to Navy for the Truxton Umsted Regatta.
