No. 19/11 Hoyas Tie BIG EAST Leader Xavier

WASHINGTON – The No. 19/11 Georgetown women's soccer team battled Xavier on Thursday afternoon in a game resulting in a 0-0 draw. The Hoyas are now 8-1-4 overall and 4-0-1 in the BIG EAST as the Musketeers move to 10-2-2 overall, 4-1 in conference.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"It was a tough game, the two teams probably canceled each other out. I didn't feel we managed to do things that made us successful and that is partially due to them putting us under pressure, trapping us and getting bodies around the ball. We needed a little bit of composure to play out of pressure. I thought we were dangerous on set pieces, but they're very dangerous on set pieces and I thought our kids in the back and our goalkeeper did a good job dealing with that. The kids are disappointed and they would have liked to win the game. I am sure the Xavier kids are in the same situation. We get ready now for Sunday's game and we will see what this result means at the end of the season."

About the Match
  • Possession toggled between the Hoyas and the Musketeers through the first 20 minutes of the match with both sides seeing action on goal.
  • Xavier had only one shot on goal in the first half to Georgetown's three.
  • The teams entered halftime scoreless after a hard-fought first 45.
  • In the second half, Natalie Means made her way down the right flank, beating her defender to get a shot off which just missed the face of the goal as it went wide of the post.
  • With just over 22 minutes left, Xavier's Rachel Dewey found Molly McLaughlin at the back post who headed the ball down towards the goal line. The Hoya backline was able to clear the ball out, but it provided XU with extra momentum for the next 10 minutes as they found multiple chances in the final third.
  • Between multiple missed opportunities, a string of injury substitutions and a helicopter break, the teams struggled to find a rhythm nearing the last five minutes of the match, but Julia Leas was able to connect on a header to force Xavier's Maria Galley to make a save and disrupt their momentum.
  • At the end of the 90 minutes, the score remained 0-0 and both teams earned their first ties in conference play this season.
  • Accounting for today's result, Georgetown's goalkeepers Allie Augur and Cara Martin have now collectively earned seven shutouts in a row.
