Mason Gudger Makes History in Football’s Loss to Penn

Box Score WASHINGTON - Freshman Mason Gudger became the second player in Patriot League history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in the same game as the Hoyas fell 59-28 to Penn on Saturday.

ON THE RECORD
"We got off to a tough start but I was proud of how we responded and came back to make it a one-score game in the third quarter. There were some really good performances on both sides of the ball, including Mason Gudger with two kickoff return touchdowns. We are going to take the bye week to regroup as we prepare for Colgate and make sure we are ready for the second half of the season." - Head Coach Rob Sgarlata on today's contest against Penn

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gudger joined Bucknell's Dante Ross (Oct. 2, 2004) as the only two players in Patriot League history to take two kickoffs to the house in the same game. The Hoya freshman finished the day with five kickoff returns for 227 all–purpose yards and his two scores.
  • His 94-yard return is the second-longest against a Division I FCS opponent in program history, sitting just behind Michael Dereus and his 100-yard score against Holy Cross in 2016. Gudger's 89-yarder ranks fourth all-time against FCS counterparts.
  • Dorrian Moultrie pulled down seven receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown while Joshua Tomas led all Hoyas with 91 receiving yards.
  • Justin Fonteneaux and David Ealey III tallied a game-high 10 tackles apiece with No. 35 earning 1.5 TFL and half a sack.
  • Wedner Cadet recorded his third interception of the year, returning it for a season-high 42 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Quakers jumped out to an early 17-0 lead in the opening frame before Hoya running back Stakely capped off a nine-play, 82-yard drive with a two-yard rushing score to pull Georgetown to within 10 (17-7).
  • Following an early touchdown by Penn (24-7), Cadet picked off Penn on its next possession and returned it 42 yards. The Hoyas capitalized on a 14-yard strike from Holley to Dorrian Moultrie and headed into halftime trailing 24-14.
  • Gudger opened the second half with a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown and cutting the Hoya deficit to three, (24-21). Penn tallied two more rushing scores over the next four minutes (38-21).
  • The Hoya running back blew past the special teams unit for the second time on the ensuing kickoff as Gudger took it to the house for an 89-yard return touchdown (38-28).
  • The Quakers pulled away down the stretch for a 59-28 victory.

NEXT GAME
The Hoyas will take their bye week before heading up to Colgate for a noon matchup in Hamilton, N.Y. on October 22.
